Moving Sensor Data Onto The Internet With SensorML http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/01/0413226

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "According to this [1]Sensors article, a
new XML encoding scheme may make it possible for you to remotely discover, access, and use real-time data obtained directly from Web-resident sensors, instruments, and imaging devices. By describing sensors using SensorML, anyone can put sensors or sensor data online for others to find and use. And because it's XML-based, it means all this data will easily be searchable. "For example, searching for particular kinds of sensors and data in a particular geographic region, with data collected within a particular time window, will be easy. This has significance for science, environmental monitoring, transportation management, public safety, disaster management, utilities operations, industrial controls, facilities management, and many other activities." In [2]this column, you'll find a summary of the Sensors' story which contains more technical details about the technology. And if you're really interested, please visit the [3]SensorML homepage." Links

OpenBSD 3.3 Released
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/01/048229

An anonymous reader writes "OpenBSD 3.3 was released today, with many new features, including integration of the ProPolice stack protection technology, W^X ('write xor X') on sparc, alpha and hppa, privilege separated XFree86 and an incredible number of enhancements and stability improvements to the packet filter, pf, including address pools for reverse NAT/load balancing, ALTQ integration for network conditioning, and anchors/tables/spamd for spam tar-pitting.
[0]Information on the release can be found here and [1]download sites
are listed here. (Also, here's a [2]handy way to speed up your DSL connection - prioritizing empty TCP ACKs and ToS low-delay traffic with OpenBSD 3.3's pf.)"

Sony Vaio GT3/K: You Spilled Your Laptop on my Camcorder http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/01/0116210

Anonymous Howard writes "[0]This article talks about Sony's new, limited production [0]Vaio GT3/K. It's a mixture of laptop and full fledged camcorder that uses the Transmeta 600mhz Crusuoe chip. Weighing in at 2.4 lbs, this hybrid has an amazing battery life of up to 17 hours, 30 GB drive, ATI Rage Mobility-M1 and 128 MB of RAM, and a swiveling screen. This is definately a very unique device, one that completely blows away Sony's previous attempts of the laptop/video combination machines, mainly due the fact that the video camera is not a wimpy little video lense, but an actual full fledged digital camcorder."

An anonymous reader writes "Now that the Morpheus/Grokster trial is over, the heads of the various P2P services are hoisting their glasses in triumph. Ciarán Tannam [0]interviews Grokster President Wayne Rosso to get his two cents on the verdict. Xolox also applauded the ruling and posted this [1]release. GeForce FX 5200 Reviewed
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/01/004236

EconolineCrush writes "[0]Tech Report has a great in-depth [1]review of NVIDIA's budget GeForce FX 5200, which brings full DirectX 9 support down to an amazing sub-$70 price point. Any budget graphics card capable of running NVIDIA's gorgeous [2]Dawn is impressive on its own, but when put under the microscope, the GeForce FX 5200 looks more like an exercise in marketing spin than a real revolution for budget graphics cards."

3D "Crystal Ball" Monitors
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/2316224

glesga_kiss writes "[0]Actuality Systems have issued a [1]press release announcing sales of their [2]3D display technology, as reported by
[3]Yahoo Finance. The system works similar to an old [4]spining disk
optical illusion, except that the 21st century version produces an image that can change through the use of digital projection. In this case the screen is a rotating disk that is capable of producing light at any point that it passes through. The upshot is that you get a real 3D representation of your object, that can be viewed from 360 degrees around the display, without the need for any special goggles. Not quite ready for Hollywood, but the scientific and engineering communities have some obvious uses for it already..." Links

SBC Getting Aggressive With Frames Patent http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/2116207

[0]mpthompson writes "Aspects of the SBC patent shakedown were covered
[1]previously on SlashDot, but the following [2]article has more
details including the royalty fee schedules on the two patents that SBC is seeking to enforce against web sites that utilize frames in their design. In short, SBC has asserted that it is the exclusive owner of a technology for "structured document" browsing - the use of frames to provide hyperlinks to documents displayed by a browser. Apparently the strategy by SBC is to set precedent against small web sites that will presumably capitulate before going after the big guys. Based on the fee schedule, SBC seems to be pretty serious about this whole patent thing and may not go away so easily."

Want Anime Network on Your Cable System? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/2035202

[0]ccnull writes "The Anime Network has launched a "tell your cable
company to carry this station!" campaign on its web site. Just enter your ZIP code at the top of the site's [1]home page (it looks like a banner ad) and you'll be that much closer to Samurai X 24/7. In case you hadn't heard, the network launched in late 2002." No support via DirecTV. I filled out the form already- I crave this channel. Links

Starting an After-School Computer Club?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/0550204

Can we help you?X

Kai_MH asks: "When I moved up to my high school this year (I'm a Sophomore), I was surprised to find that there was no 'computer' or 'technology' club at the school. Sure, there's A/V, but what fun is carrying TV sets around? So, I'd like to approach my school's administration about starting an after-school computer club. I'd like to educate my peers on the alternatives to Windows (Linux and Open Source), how hardware works and fits together, job offerings in computer-related fields, and anything else that may be of interest. Perhaps we can do fund-raisers to build and upgrade a computer for the club, which could be donated to the school or community? Does anyone have suggestions on this? Has anyone tried this before? I've had a lot of support from my peers, but I'm still not quite sure how to go about it."

Linux Goes to the Movies

In case you haven't met him yet, Gollum is one of the stars of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. He's a sickly, pale creature on a quest to find the Ring. But he's not played by a human actor. He's a computer-generated image created on the hottest server platform to hit mainstream corporate computing: Linux.

My (Ongoing) Linux Odysssey
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/1723226

Is Linux ready for the desktop? The debate goes on endlessly. I would not care to comment on that. What matters to me is that it works for me. Oh, Linux has its problems. I suppose people for whom a computer is just a tool to get work done may get frustrated that with Linux, not everything works out of the box (though an amazing amount of stuff does, today). People may not like it that one often has to learn oodles of stuff to make things work, ...

What's 64-bit computing to Linux?
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/1658228

Unlike most areas of the technology business, 64-bit computing has somehow remained immune to the forces of commodity competition. Most 64-bit systems have historically been tied to proprietary operating systems. Compared with the more widespread x86, these systems only powered a small percentage of corporate computing shops and were relatively pricey. But with the introduction of its 64-bit Opteron processor line earlier this month, Advanced ...
