U.S. Says Canada Cares Too Much About Liberties http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/04/2311201

A cheeky writer at Canada's Ottawa Citizen newspaper has written a
[0]story about the [1]U.S. State Department's 2002 Patterns of Global
    Terrorism.

Search for the Missing Universe
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/04/2245236

[0]Chris Gondek writes "The [1]Sydney Morning Herald has reported that
[2]one of the greatest discoveries of our time could be made under the
Yorkshire moors. Deep in a Yorkshire mine, scientists are toiling to     solve a cosmic puzzle that has baffled astronomers for 70 years: about     90 per cent of the universe is missing. Analyse the movements of stars     and you can work out how much matter is making them swirl round in     galactic islands and how much makes galaxies cluster together as they     do - in other words, you can work out how much mass makes the universe     look the way it does. But measurements suggest that the universe is not     what it appears."

Video Codec Comparison
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/05/0149224

FonkiE writes "[0]Doom9 wrote a good article: After more than 3 weeks     of work and no free time during that period it has been done: The     latest [1]codec comparison is online. 7 codecs have been put through     one of the hardest tests in the history of codec testing. The results:     find out on your own ;) I had planned to change the presentation     somewhat but certain events (forum problems and such) prevented me from     completing this for the release. I plan to eventually supply an updated     version of the comparison."

Nmap Security Tool Survey
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/04/2034224

[0]spring writes "Every so often, the author of everyone's favorite
network reconnaissance tool, [1]nmap, runs a survey to determine which     security-oriented software products are most popular. This year's
[2]tool survey was just released, and it contains some interesting
results. Old favorites like [3]Nessus, [4]Snort, [5]Netcat, and
[6]Ethereal made the list, of course. [7]SAINT and [8]SARA are still
around. But a number of new tools appeared this year, like Windows-only
[9]GFI LANguard, [10]SuperScan, and [11]Cain & Abel. [12]Nikto and
[13]Kismet demonstrate the growing importance of wireless networks.
[2]The survey contains many good tools. Certainly worth a read."

Intel's 'Personal Server': The Handheld Killer? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/04/2012257

[0]markbaard writes "Intel is developing a wireless, pocket-sized
personal server that may replace laptops and PDAs altogether. The     'personal server,' which is being developed at Intel Research by     ubiquitous computing wizard Roy Want, is the size of a deck of cards,     half the weight of an iPaq, and has no i/o, no screen, and no     peripherals. The device never leaves its user's pocket or handbag.     Pictures of the personal server and the story are at [1]baard.com." Links

>From Legal Wordings to Economic Reality http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/04/207240

[0]Holger Blasum writes "The directive on software patents in Europe is
(currently) scheduled in the European Parliament mid June, so the 7-8     May parliament hearing on [1] Software Patents: from legal wordings to     economic reality might be a good opportunity to make your views heard     in Brussels. There is some support for accomodation, and [2]hitchhikers     or [3]taxistop might ease getting there. If you cannot attend, find     (and invite) your EU representative [4]here (hint: this database does     not include so many email addresses, so it would not be wise to go for     this in the very last minute; if the options overwhelm you try the     "Legal affairs committee", and/or the persons you are likely to vote     for in the 2004 elections)."

Looking at Longhorn

[0]ShinyPlasticBag writes "Paul Thurrott has an excellent [1]preview of
Longhorn milestone five over at his [2]Supersite for Windows. It looks     like this may be Microsoft's equivalent to OS X -- the next version of     Windows will have a 3D accelerated desktop and other graphical goodies.     In addition to this, it will include a journaling file system, so us     mere mortals can enjoy what Linux Geeks have had for years." What Games Have Actually Affected You?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/30/221203

[0]FortKnox asks: "What games have affected you simply by playing them?
What games immersed you so well into its environment that you actually     felt different after playing it? For me, I'd have to go with System     Shock 2. Basically the predecessor to Deus Ex, it was the only game     that made me so afraid that the minute I heard a matron mother, I     turned the other way and ran. What game scared you to death, or made     you think after playing it?"

Now Axmark wants MySQL to be the database of choice for NetWare customers everywhere. The company announced at Novell's BrainShare conference last month that the full version 4.0 of its flagship database would ship with NetWare 6.5 this summer.

Anonymous Reader writes "Before we begin to think of passing laws     against spam, says Linux and Main in an editorial comment, we need to     think long and hard, and ask some questions, such as how do we define     spam?"

SCO, DRM, Spam, Privacy
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/03/1855240

Time for a new installation paradigm, Part 4 http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/03/1629258

If developers and packagers flesh out the details of these suggestions,     modify them to iron out wrinkles and then adopt the practices, most if     not all Linux software installations will be trouble-free and     distribution-agnostic. (3,250 words)

SCO vs. IBM lawsuit: SCO has a problem
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/03/141259

Anonymous Reader writes "This article makes the point that, even if the     trade secret misappropriation lawsuit against IBM has merit, SCO     themselves have knowingly redistributed that same code under the GPL.     And, of course, they can't relicense the code without forfeiting their     own rights to Linux under the GPL. It would appear that Red Hat and     SuSE are in the clear after all and the Linux kernel remains clean."
