Sega Cancels Merger With Sammy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/08/0335223

After many complicated and confusing rumors, Bloomberg Japan seems to     have confirmed that [0]Sega Corp has abandoned plans to merge with     Sammy. Apparently, Sega couldn't agree financial terms with [1]Sammy,     who specialize in [2]pachinko machines, and also have some home and     arcade-based videogame development. The front-runner for a Sega     merger/sale is now [3]Namco, but Microsoft and Electronic Arts have     also been mentioned as possible suitors. The saga continues.. Links

[0]Farley Mullet writes "As seen on [1]MacSlash, here is a link to

Earthlink Wins Another Spam Award: $16 million http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/08/0044230

linuxwrangler writes "U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr.
[0]awarded Earthlink $16 million and an injunction against Howard
Carmack for Carmack's use of Earthlink to deliver spam. Given that     Earthlink is still awaiting payment of the $25 million it won against     Kahn C. Smith last year, it views the injunction as the bigger of the     two wins." A few more of these, and maybe the tide of spam will eb.     Maybe. Nah.

First Matrix Reloaded Review
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/08/0041220

[0]EpsCylonB writes "The [1]IMDB is reporting that the London Daily
mirror has the first [2]review of the Matrix Reloaded. Sounds like the     Wachowski borthers have gone for an all out action movie which is a     shame if true. What I liked most about the original was the way it     blended stunning action with a subtle philosphical theme about how we     percieve reality." I'll hold judgement until the closing credits     myself.

Widescreen (Finally) Winning
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/07/2135232

Yort writes "There's a little [0]blurb over at the [1]IMDB about     customers at Blockbuster now generally preferring the widescreen, or     letterbox, format over full-screen. This after Blockbuster [2]tried to     only stock full screen versions of movies a few years ago. I guess now     the wife will have to let me buy that new [3]widescreen TV, right?" Links

Wireless at Firewire Speeds?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/07/2133245

MeCoward writes "EETimes reporting on working group that hopes to
[0]leapfrog 802.11 to create wireless 1394 links. Initially 100mbps but
aiming for 400mbps." I don't expect to see this anytime soon, but it     certainly makes things like wireless HDTV feasible. Sure would be cool.     Of course Bluetooth is only now just catching on, so imagine how long     it'll be before this becomes practical. Links

Electronic Paper Advances

How Would You Argue for Open Source?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/06/2127253

[0]Nate asks: "I am currently working for an international corporation,
and the site I am working at was (until very recently) entirely run on     Windows. We recently purchased a Solaris server, and I am in charge of     setting it up and resetting the global UNIX standard. The problem is     that management doesn't want to install software that does not have 24     hour, worldwide support available along with it, yet they want the     capabilities that only open source software can provide on a UNIX     platform (VNC, OpenSSH, etc..) without spending insane amounts of     money. I was wondering how the Slashdot community deals with convincing     management that Open Source software is safe to use when creating a     global standard, and what your solutions have been to supporting users     working with open source software." Two years ago, [1]Slashdot tackled     the Enterprise Support question. Now, say you had that particular     problem solved and the only thing left is that all-important pitch to     Upper Management. What arguments would you use in your attempts to get     their approval? What statistics and references would you point to, in     order to back everything up?

SuSE 8.2 -- better than Mandrake for new users? http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/27/1850233

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - I have been using SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional for two weeks now, and it is as close to Linux desktop perfection as I have found so far. (I know I'm not the first to say this, but I figure saying it one more time can't hurt.) This doesn't mean it's totally perfect, and my experience is on one particular laptop and may not be duplicated on your hardware, but this is the first SuSE version I have actually liked -- and ...

Michael S. Mimoso writes "Like many IT managers nowadays, Darren     Spruell and his IT team were asked to cut their company's IT costs to     the bone. Within the past few years, they've moved a large portion of     their company's infrastructure to Linux platforms and open source     software (OSS). In addition to achieving the desired cuts in hardware,     software and management costs, the move to Linux has delivered less     expensive, high-quality system and ...

Scratching that programming itch
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/07/1656218

Don't know where to look next?X

Joe Barr writes "Why do I blame Petreley and Hentzen for this? Simple.     They got me thinking about Linux development. Petreley's analysis of     Linux developers started it. And because I haven't coded any real Linux     apps (unless I count that toy I created with Kylix), I began to feel a     small twitch where the itch used to be. When Whil Hentzen told me a     couple of weeks ago that developing applications for Linux is the sweet     spot for software ...
