Six Monkeys And An Old Saw
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/11/0015240

Sayten241 writes "They say that an infinite amount of monkeys typing at     an infinite amount of typewriters will produce literature greater than     Shakespeare. Well, it has been proven that [0]six monkeys and one     computer will produce a computer that has been smashed with a rock,     urinated upon, and four pages worth of the letter 's.' The end of the     article states that scientifically this does prove that monkeys are     more complex than random generators." Links

GoboLinux Rethinks The Linux Filesystems http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/10/1636245

[0]dolbywan_kenobi writes "[1]GoboLinux is an alternative Linux
distribution which redefines the entire filesystem hierarchy. In     GoboLinux we have paths such as /Programs/XFree86/4.3/ and     /System/Settings/BootScripts/Reboot." By design, GoboLinux is quite a     bit [2]different from most Linux distributions, and -- notably -- is a     live ISO, always nice.

New Loudspeaker Eliminates Distortive Influence http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/10/1512228

[0]fejrskov writes "The Danish audio/video company 'Bang & Olufsen'
[1]announced a new loudspeaker which promises to eliminate the bad
influence from walls, floors and ceilings on the sound. This is     achieved by using two technologies: ALT (Acoustic Lens Technology) uses     sound dispersing lenses to make sound travel equally in all directions.     ABC (Adaptive Bass Control) involves sliding a tiny microphone out at     the base of the speaker, playing a series of test sounds, and adapting     the bass according to the measured acoustic response. Each active     loudspeaker contains amplifiers for a total of 2500W (!) output using     B&O's patented ICEPower concept. The price? Approximately 55.000 Danish     kroner (8.000 Euro) each."

Major release of the Jargon File -- 4.4.0, now with cartoons http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/11/025237

The Jargon File is a central part of the heritage of the Linux and     open-source movements. As we approach the File's 30th anniversary, it     is my pleasure and honor to bring the hacker community a major new     release, 4.4.0.

Company or community?

Commercial software houses must     cater to the user. Which is why we should be glad they're taking more     interest in Linux."

Notes from the Texas 'open source bill' hearing http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/10/138240

  • by Ken Barber - The Great State of Texas held hearings this week on their open source bill, SB 1579. Texas legislators have a little more backbone than the ones in the committee that heard the Oregon bill. Here's an exchange between Sen. John Carona (R-Dallas), the bill's sponsor, and Mario Correa (who also traveled to Oregon to testify against our bill) of the Business Software Alliance.

Is Windows 2003 Server really faster than Linux/Samba? http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/10/1220243

Microsoft claims Windows 2003 Server is twice as fast as Linux, at     least when it's used for file serving. I spoke to Jeremy Allison, head     of the Samba team, who provided a few insights into the test     configurations that don't leap out at the reader because they are     hidden away in appendixes to the benchmark document. Allison feels     this, in itself, is substantially responsible for the outcome.
