It appears that the automated system that the RIAA uses picked the term "Usher" and the extenstion ".mp3" on an FTP site hosting the work of Professor Emeritus Peter Usher and falsely assumed that the files were songs by the musician [2]Usher. The university accepted the apology saying "that this was an honest mistake by the recording industry" and Spokesman Tysen Kendig said Penn State "remains committed to working closely with the RIAA"." http://www.usherworld.com/Linux Powers First Handheld Software Radio http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/12/203225 An anonymous reader writes "According to [0]this article at LinuxDevices.com, [1]Vanu Technology is demonstrating what it claims represents the world's first handheld 'software radio' using an iPAQ PDA running Linux at a [2]conference in Washington DC today. Vanu apparently has implemented the signal processing functions on the iPAQ's XScale processor, and their software uses POSIX APIs to make it platform independent. Software radios implement multiple radio standards and frequency bands in software, rather than hardware. A standard iPAQ expansion pack houses the radio transceiver." Links

Intel Reveals Itanium 2 Glitch
NeoChichiri writes "News.com is running on an article about [0]glitches in Intel's Itanium 2 chips. Even though it doesn't affect all chips, they have still stopped shipments of the new 450 Servers until the problem is resolved. Apparently it has to be 'a specific set of operations in a specific sequence with specific data.' Intel is saying that affects the 900MHz and 1 GHz Itanium 2 chips and that it will not affect the upcoming 1.5 GHz Itanium 2 6M chips." Until the next iteration of chip arrives though, Oliver Wendell Jones writes, "they recommend working around the problem by underclocking the processor to run at 800 MHz instead of its default 900 MHz or 1 GHz." TiVo For Radio?
An anonymous reader points out this [0]Wired story that says "several electronics makers are releasing new products that promise to do for radio what the TiVo digital video recorder has done for television." Linux Midrange Storage In A Snap
Customers aren't locked into a Windows-based system for midrange network-attached storage systems--at least not yet. Embedded Linux powers "first hand-held software radio" http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/12/1752229 Vanu, Inc. is demonstrating what it claims represents "the first hand-held software radio" at the technology showcase of the "Wireless Innovations: New Technologies and Evolving Policies" conference in Washington, DC today. The demonstration basically consists of a standard XScale-based Hewlett-Packard iPAQ PDA running an embedded Linux operating system; a prototype 100-475 MHz radio transceiver is housed in a standard iPAQ expansion pack, and ...

Sun Micro Fights Back After Caustic Report http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/12/1640256 Sun Microsystems is spitting nails over a biting report from Meta Group, a market research and consulting firm, that suggested, among other things, that Sun's customers should rethink doing business with the company in the long term, and that Chief Executive Scott McNealy should be replaced.
