Mars Rover: Tumbleweed Models
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/2012235

An anonymous reader writes "A North Carolina State [0]project has     prototyped a wind-blown Mars exploration rover. It draws its     inspiration from the lowly tumbleweed, to cover large distances with     low-power requirements. For collecting atmospheric, thermal or     geological samples across great distances, the 'single-wheel'     tumbleweed has some advantages over the usual four-wheeling approach to     tough terrain."

Low Cost Cinema Through Dynamic Pricing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/208226

cinesprocket writes "[0]EasyJet, the European pioneer of [1]LowCost     airline travel has broadened its horizon into the entertainment field.
[2]easyCinema is to open tomorrow in Milton Keynes, England, offering
cinema-goers cheap rate tickets as low as 20 pence (33 cents) using the     same formula that made their airline company revolutionise the industry     in Europe. However, according to the [3]the BBC, easyCinema is being     given the bird by Hollywood who will not allow it to show it's high     cost movies for a low price for fear that it will create a domino     effect in the future, like the airline industry has felt (in Europe).     Given that easyCinema is willing to pay the movie producers the same     price as the other multiplexes, it shouldn't matter what price they     sell on the tickets at for we poor folk? Their success depends upon     showing the big films and their lawyers are reported to be already     mounting a case. Given that the case will be heard in England, where     the MPAA have less of a hold on the government, it will be interesting     whether they can bring the behemoth to its knees." Links

Until the new database is released, SAP will continue     to develop its own free database system [2]SAP DB, however it will now     use the MySQL brand name." On a related note, IBM is introducing a

Linux.com
The worst-case scenario
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/21/1529217

  • by Mark McGrew - Three years ago, I warned of an attempt by Big Software Companies to insinuate their control into your life, using your computer as their "foot in the door." Well, a lot has changed. Of the three players I named (IBM, AT&T, and Microsoft) only one remains a credible threat to Linux users: Microsoft, with SCO as its lackey.

Microsoft vs. Linux Takes a Weird Turn http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1431240

Gates & Co. are paying a licensing fee for SCO's Unix technology --     and some techies see a plot to derail the rival operating system.

   Making the Move To Linux
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/181211

Since 1995, my friend Tristan Louis has run his Web site TNL.net on     Microsoft Windows. He started his site on Windows NT using Microsoft     IIS. In late 2000, he moved to Windows 2000 and continued to run on     this until recently, when he switched to Linux. wWy did he decide to     change things? Here is his story.

Microsoft Likes Open Source. Kind Of.
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/184204

Can't find what you're looking for?X

In the escalating controversy that pits The SCO Group--owner of one of     the original Unix operating systems--against Linux developers and     distributors, Microsoft has come down, predictably, on the side of SCO.     Yet, overlooked in the stir created when Microsoft recently licensed     SCO's Unix for use in some of its products is the fact that Microsoft     itself has been easing restrictions on its own code.

The Ponytail vs the Penguin
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1752246

Dave B writes "The Economist's "Face Value" profile this week is Sun's     Jonathan Schwartz. Is Sun's Solaris on X86 a better strategy to counter     the Linux-Intel juggenaut than Microsoft's solution of a 100% MS     Windows discount? The Economist thinks it has promise."

Mandrake Linux 9.1 Power Pack Edition
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1447218

Mandrake Linux 9.1 is another big step forward for MandrakeSoft and     Linux. After my introduction to Linux while writing the "Newbie"ginning     article I was impressed enough to stick with it. At the time I only had     it on one computer which was basically a glorified stereo. Now, due in     part to hardware changes, I'm running Mandrake Linux 9.1 on 3     computers.

Torvalds Sounds Off On SCO Lawsuit
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1427233

Linus Torvalds won't render his own verdict on SCO Group's legal case     against IBM until the Unix code in question is revealed in court.

Nathan, who was commenting after the opening of Sybase's New Zealand     head office in Wellington, says that never has any venture offering its     main product or service free of charge made sufficient profit to stay     in business in the long term.
