http://www.eff.org/Running a Research Lab on Free Software? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/30/0221234 Neurotensor asks: "My lab is researching quantum computing, and I don't like the fact that Windows / Visual Basic [seems to be] the preferred solution for controlling the experiments. It's not just a pride thing, unlike many colleagues I know what I'm missing out on, in the free software world. I've wasted a *lot* of time and effort trying to implement some very simple stuff with free (and better) alternatives, simply because certain hardware manufacturers utterly refuse to support anything other than Windows." There were [0]older [1]articles that touched on this subject, 2 years ago, but are others still finding themselves in the same situation as the submitter? Department of Defense Gadget Show
blackp writes "[0]DefenseLINK has an article about [1]Force Protection Equipment Demonstration IV. This year they had over 2,600 gadget and equipment for defense and government agencies. The list includes kevlar suits, body heat camo, a RoBoCop Suit, even biometric identification. Some pictures are available, although somewhat limited. This show seems perfect for the geek with a big budget." Or the government with a big budget. Still, some neat things on display. aoteoroa writes "Microsoft will [0]pay $750 million to AOL Time Warner
to settle an antitrust lawsuit filed by AOL on behalf of its subsidiary
Netscape last year, the companies said Thursday. At first blush the
deal looks good, but I can't help but wonder how a deal that ties AOL
to IE again will negatively impact my [1]favorite web browser." Here's
a news.com story that [2]also covers it. Is the browser war over? If
so, it sure was anticlimactic.

A Supernova In Red/Blue Plaid, Please
Snotnose writes "The New York Times is reporting that scientists have
found a [0] a supernova factory . From the article, scientists
estimated that the cluster alone, which contains up to a million stars,
probably produces a supernova once every two years. That is a rate 50
times higher than usual in entire galaxies. Stars explode in Earth's
home galaxy, the Milky Way, only once in a century.. Sounds pretty
awesome. "

San Mehat On Web Services & .Net
A reader writes: "There's an interview with [0]San Mehat in regards to .Net & Webservices. He has some interesting comments about what will work and what won't work, and where things are going." San is well known for [1]his Netwinder work, as well as being a good [2]DJ. And, in the interest of full disclosure, San does work for [3]VA Software, the parent company of [4]OSDN, as is DevChannel. Lindows.com Revelation Could Be Fatal Blow to SCO http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/29/229251 Anonymous Reader writes "Lindows.com announced today that it has previously entered into an agreement through which SCO would provide Lindows with certain technology. According to Michael Robertson, CEO of Lindows.com, this means that Lindows.com customers will not have to worry about SCO's ongoing attempts to "protect its IP." Interestingly enough, this may cause a much larger impact than Robertson bargained for. Read more at OfB.biz." Darl McBride threatens to sue Linus Torvalds http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/29/1338209 Dave B writes "SCO boss Darl McBride had a bad day yesterday. Novell cast doubt on SCO's claim to any System V Unix IP, the stock price lost 24% and then it seems Mr McBride publicly threatened to sue Linus Torvalds. The Inquirer has the story." Interview with Ivan Arce, CTO of Core Security Technologies http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/29/1545250 LogError writes "The Chief Tehnology Officer of Core Security Technologies discusses the security threats, his top five security tools, the importance of penetration testing and information security in general." Gauging the enterprise-readiness of open-source financial apps http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/29/1548233 Michael S. Mimoso writes "Today, Linux-based applications are being used to manage and make large sums of money in the financial services industry. Meanwhile, applications for businesses outside the financial services space are few and far between. Only two open-source financial products -- Nola and SQL-Ledger -- have gained much notice in the business world."
Big Machines, Big Linux
The joke used to be that IBM's mainframes were the useless dinosaurs of computing. None of IBM's rivals are laughing now. With Linux gaining popularity on IBM's zSeries, the mainframe is making a strong comeback.
LindowsOS enters Japanese market
Lindows.com, Inc. today announced a distribution agreement with Japan's EDGE corporation. Under the program, LindowsOS will be sold for home, work and educational uses, according to the announcement.
Why you shouldn't use Linux
You probably already know the advantages of Linux. Even if it may seems contradictory for a site dedicated to Linux, I think that's important that new users and beginners know the disadvantages and limitations of Linux. This knowledge is essential to correctly evaluate if Linux will meet your needs. It will also make deceptions less likely, since you will know what are the main limitations of the OS. Linux Operating System Passes With Flying Colors http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/29/1445204 Ready for a new operating system on your computer? Because a new operating system is ready for you. I'm talking about Linux, the free software alternative to Microsoft Windows.
SCO's 10k report
Anonymous Reader writes "Open Source bug hunters have been checking all available SCO material. In their 10k report (tax?) Karsten Self has uncovered confirmation of Novell's claim to the System V copyrights. Copyrights that Darl McBride was reported to claim as SCO's property as recently as yesterday. No doubt he was misquoted."
