Slashdot
ssyladin writes "CNN is running an article about [0] the future US army battle dress, code-named 'Scorpion'. It says that "..soldiers of 2011 will step into wired uniforms that incorporate all the equipment they need. The uniforms will monitor vital signs and plug them into a massive network of satellites, unmanned planes and robotic vehicles the military has planned." There will be sensors to monitor heartrate and blood-pressure, built-in tourniquets, a HUD to connect to GPS info, overhead maps, infrared and starlight cameras, and even the venerable M16 rifles are slated for an overhaul." harder to pin down."

Sounds like it basically estimates the maximum efficient speed of your network, and then goes for it, dumping a lot of time-consuming error checking." There's also [1]an article at the New Scientist with some additional information. Links

I feel like some of them are “skating” and all I am paying for is a book, a posted syllabus, and a final exam. Have any of you been to an online school, and what where your experiences like? How did you feel about the quality of education you were getting?"

The patent would seem to cover pretty much [2]any implementation of a video-on-demand system that you (or at least I) can think of. Read for yourself to decide whether this patent either is not original work or is blatantly obvious to the most casual observer. The patent could certainly be invalidated by the courts on either point, but that'd take a fight in court that won't be cheap." Links

Enterprise Computing for the Office
Anonymous Reader writes "This whitepaper by Michael C. Barnes, president of NorhTec, argues that data centers and the enterprise can migrate to Linux to realize the significant advantages of open standards today. Barnes outlines a strategy to use Linux to access core business systems and details an approach where organizations can use Linux to augment or replace PCs with thin or lean clients that are easier to support, less expensive to ... Red Hat Linux 9 - The Windows User's Installation http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/04/199217 Anonymous Reader writes "A Windows user takes the decision to install Red Hat Linux 9. He puts his findings in print and despite some issues he says: "Lots of software, nice desktop, pretty fonts. Red Hat is on the right track and with just a few glitch fixes and tweaks, Red Hat 9 may be ready for the consumer desktop market."" Is SCO Setting a Trap for Linux Developers? http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/04/198211 SCO (SCOX), the company formerly known as Caldera (CALD), and its CEO, Darl McBride have been making vague and unsupported allegations that there is SCO-owned Unix code in Linux. Why I wish Netscape had survived
The settlement of the legal battle between Microsoft and AOL Time Warner means Netscape can now be taken off life support and the body harvested for any useful parts that remain. Automatic Astronomy: New Robotic Telescopes See and Think http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/04/1722231 If an asteroid is discovered tonight and found to be on a collision course with Earth, you may have a robot to thank for the warning. If a star blinks for a nanosecond, you won't notice it, but a robot might, and it will deduce that an object no bigger than this city, roaming the solar system in Pluto's realm, has just passed in front of a distant star.
Linux enters the mainstream
Open source software is one of the miracles of the Internet. 10 years ago it would have been unimaginable. But now, Linux is entering the mainstream operating system market. It is backed by most of the world's biggest IT companies including IBM, HP, Oracle, Computer Associates and SAP. Linux has made an extraordinary transition from the `sandals' to the `suits'. Linux and mainframes, part 1: Odd couple or perfect match? http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/04/1631224 Michael S. Mimoso writes "At first glance, Linux and the IBM mainframe are an odd couple. The teenage operating system and senior citizen computer are worlds apart in their origins and pricing philosophies, among other things. Yet they do make a good team, according to Maria Eisenhaendler and Ingolf Salm, co-authors of the new Prentice Hall book Linux on the Mainframe."
Recycling law boosts hi-tech transfer
Every year, 1.5 million old, but working, computers are buried in landfill sites. Now, an impending EU directive could mean these discarded machines, and many others, enjoy a more useful life.
