An anonymous reader writes "According to a CBC News story, researchers
have genetically modified coffee seedlings to [0]produce up to 70 per
cent less caffeine." The Japanese researchers quoted in the article say
"..demand for decaffeinated coffee is growing worldwide. Caffeine can
trigger palpitations, increase blood pressure and disrupt sleep in
sensitive people", and so "..used a tool called RNA interference to
genetically engineer the one-year-old plants." Seems like these boffins
may be competing against the University Of Hawaii researchers we

Martin Kallisti writes "The [0]Swedish Department of Justice has today
proposed a bill to be put into effect, if it passes Parliament, on the
1st of January, 2004. It is in accordance to EU directives, but will
also criminalize the downloading of material from the Internet without
the explicit permission of the copyright holder. Furthermore, it will
become illegal to break cryptos, circumvent copy protection (mod chips
et al), copy books, and as I understand it, use software that is
designed to help with any of these tasks, and many other things." An
anonymous reader points to [1]an English-language article about this
Swedish EUCD proposal, which also mentions a hefty $4 levy on blank
digital media such as CD-ROMs.

Europe, Free Speech, And The Internet
drdale writes "[0]Declan McCullagh responds at CNET.com to a proposal by the Council of Europe to require Internet sites to publish replies by individuals whom the sites criticize. This would apply to all web sites, apparently, including blogs. Per McCullagh, the Council's proposals do not have the force of law, but often serve as the basis for new laws." Imagine the chilling effect if [1]McCullagh's own politechbot and similar sites had to follow such rules. Links 0. http://news.com.com/2010-1071_3-1017333.html

What SCO Wants, SCO Gets
Anonymous Reader writes "...like many religious folk, the Linux-loving crunchies in the open-source movement are a) convinced of their own righteousness, and b) sure the whole world, including judges, will agree. They should wake up. SCO may not be very good at making a profit by selling software. (Last year the company lost $24.9 million on sales of $64.2 million.) But it is very good at getting what it wants from other companies. And it has a ...
Win4Lin 5: A Real Win for Linux Users
Timothy R. Butler writes "About a month ago, NeTraverse contacted OfB Labs with an early release copy of Win4Lin 5.0, the follow-up to the already impressive Win4Lin 4.0 released in May 2002. Win4Lin, for those not familiar with it, offers near-native (or better) speed "virtualization" of a Windows box so that one can run Windows 9x (95/98/Me) inside GNU/Linux."
LinuxQuestions.org adds a Debian Forum

Death of a Browser
Love it or hate it, this week has been all about Microsoft killing MSIE for the Mac. Some love it, some hate it, but all view the MSIE decision as historic. The question is, what does it mean for the Mac's future: a portent of Microsoft abandoning the platform? The loss of a great browser? Good riddance to an outdated browser? The Dark Ages of web development in which Microsoft calls the shots from its fully Windows-based, integrated web ...
Review: Windows Services for UNIX
Anonymous Reader writes "Everyone knows what Microsoft does by now. What some people do not know is that Microsoft releases a system integration software named Windows services for UNIX. The review shows us what to expect from the package and how it compares to Cygwin." Windows to Linux basics: Analysts say transition from Windows to Linux isn't easy http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/18/1911251 Michael S. Mimoso writes "Microsoft's new Licensing 6.0 scheme may drive Windows NT shops away from proprietary systems and make them at least consider Linux and open-source software, but several industry analysts contacted by SearchEnterpriseLinux.com warn that the transition won't be easy." Eset Unveils NOD32 Antivirus for Linux Mail Servers http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/18/1743243 Eset Software, a leading provider of Internet software security solutions, announced today the debut of NOD32 Antivirus for Linux Mail Servers, extending the industry-leading effectiveness of NOD32 antivirus detection software to the Linux email server environment.
Sun Sets Sights on IBM's AIX Customers
Moving to profit from SCO Group's revocation of IBM's Unix license (which IBM denies SCO has the right to do), Sun Microsystems charged in to play the role of White Knight for Big Blue's AIX customers.
