Niue Gets Island-Wide WiFi
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/24/0324253

[0]NinjaPablo writes "Business Wire is running a story about the
polynesian island of Niue. Niue has just completed an [1]island-wide     wifi network, making it the first country with nationwide free wifi     access. This comes after countrywide email was started in 1997, dialup     access in 1999, and broadband this Spring, all free for anyone." Links

Culture Clash: SCO, OpenLinux, Linus And The GPL http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/24/0237200

hobsonchoice writes "[0]SCO has issued a letter saying SCO Linux     customers won't be sued. The same does not seem to apply if using a     non-SCO distribution such as RedHat." [1]LightSail points to the [2]SCO     letter itself, and raises an interesting point: "If they approve the     use of 'their' IP in Linux in a single kernel, then the GPL holds that     IP SCO allows to be used by a select few must be freely released to any     and all. It appears that all Linux users everywhere were just given a     license to continued use of Linux even if SCO would win their suit with     IBM." And [3]Haikuu writes "eWeek recently posted an [4]interview     conducted by e-mail exchange with Linus Torvalds regarding his recent     move to the OSDL and the SCO suit." Links

Chip Firm Hit By 45-Year-Old Patent
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/24/0031259

JPMH writes "The Register is reporting that a Taiwanese chip foundry is
[0]being sued over two chemistry patents, one over 45 years old. The
patents at issue were filed in 1957 and 1964, but are still in force     because they were not granted until 1987 and 1992 respectively. The     first patent, [1]4,702,808, details an apparatus and method for     initiating chemical reactions by focusing "radiant energy, such as a     laser" onto streams of particles. The second patent, [2]5,131,941 also     details an apparatus and method for initiating chemical reactions, but     this time radiation is used to provide the energy kick needed to get     the compounds to interact."

(When) Will Linux Pass Apple On The Desktop? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/2232214

EisPick writes "A [0]column posted today on Slate ponders projections     that Linux PCs will pass Apple in desktop market share next year. Will     Linux do to OS X what it already has done to Tru64, Irix, HP/UX, AIX     and Solaris and emerge as the only viable competitor to Windows on the     desktop?"

Innovative Uses for a Computer Classroom? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/2048248

[0]flard asks: "I will be teaching a Freshman English class at a medium
sized [1]public university, in a computer classroom for next semester.     Every student has their own machine with an internet connection. I am     thinking about using a [2]weblog for them to post their work and     critique each other. Do you guys have any other cool ideas on what to     do and what NOT to do?" How can the computers best be applied to assist     in teaching a non-technical class? Use of a weblog is a start, but are     there other pieces of software that can be deployed in such a setting? Business Software Needs A Revolution
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/1938208

An anonymous reader writes "According to a Businessweek Online article,     today's high-end business software [0]is bloated, buggy, and too     expensive - no surprise to those of us who have paid our bills by     adding pointless features to some piece of software arbitrarily priced     at $100k. Evidently, firms are now re-evaluating their software     purchases, and finding that they're not working out the way the sales     guys told them they would."

Linux and Microsoft (Yet Again)
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/1458213

I looked through a whole series of presentations from a Microsoft EMEA     briefing on Linux. Little chance of discovering positive Linux     perspectives in it, but it was interesting in many ways. Microsoft is     claiming a better TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for Windows than Linux     (on the server), based on several studies. It reminded me of the TCO     figures I used to see for IBM mainframe (3270 dumb terminals) against     PCs. From what I remember, the ...

http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/16/1552233

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - I'm sure Outlook and Outlook Express have many fine features, but they also have many fine vulnerabilities. Even though I run Linux and can't get infected by the many email worms and viruses sent to me every day by unwary Outlook users, they suck up a lot of bandwidth, which is especially annoying when I'm using a phone modem in a hotel room instead of my home/office DSL connection. So please, let's get together and ...
