Culture Clash: SCO, OpenLinux, Linus And The GPL http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/24/0237200 hobsonchoice writes "[0]SCO has issued a letter saying SCO Linux customers won't be sued. The same does not seem to apply if using a non-SCO distribution such as RedHat." [1]LightSail points to the [2]SCO letter itself, and raises an interesting point: "If they approve the use of 'their' IP in Linux in a single kernel, then the GPL holds that IP SCO allows to be used by a select few must be freely released to any and all. It appears that all Linux users everywhere were just given a license to continued use of Linux even if SCO would win their suit with IBM." And [3]Haikuu writes "eWeek recently posted an [4]interview conducted by e-mail exchange with Linus Torvalds regarding his recent move to the OSDL and the SCO suit." Links

Business Software Needs A Revolution
An anonymous reader writes "According to a Businessweek Online article,
today's high-end business software [0]is bloated, buggy, and too
expensive - no surprise to those of us who have paid our bills by
adding pointless features to some piece of software arbitrarily priced
at $100k. Evidently, firms are now re-evaluating their software
purchases, and finding that they're not working out the way the sales
guys told them they would."

Linux and Microsoft (Yet Again)
I looked through a whole series of presentations from a Microsoft EMEA briefing on Linux. Little chance of discovering positive Linux perspectives in it, but it was interesting in many ways. Microsoft is claiming a better TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for Windows than Linux (on the server), based on several studies. It reminded me of the TCO figures I used to see for IBM mainframe (3270 dumb terminals) against PCs. From what I remember, the ... IBM India appoints Benz Infotech as Linux partner http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/1455202 IBM India has appointed Benz Infotech as its Linux services and solution partner, whereby the latter would help the information technology major to deliver end-to-end Linux solutions to customers in India. Linux-based STB boasts 1st DVD-quality video over Wi-Fi http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/1444222 PRISMIQ announced the release of 802.11a/g Wi-Fi support for its Linux-based set-top "entertainment gateway". According to PRISMIQ, the 54 Mbps bandwidth available with 802.11g allows users of its "MediaPlayer" to stream high quality video files from the PC to the TV, and turns the MediaPlayer into "the first consumer set-top box to enable DVD-quality video over 802.11g wireless." Linux untapped gold mine, Corel shareholders say http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/1425255 NZheretic writes "Ottawa Business Journal: Corel Corp. stands to miss an enormous Linux market opportunity if it submits to Vector Capital's $97.6-million takeover, shareholders of the Ottawa company say.
