Honeytokens: The Other Honeypot
martyros writes "I just read a fascinating article by Lance Spitzner securityfocus.com about a concept he calls [0] honeytokens. The idea is similar to that of a [1] honeypot, which he defines as "an information system resource whose value lies in unauthorized or illicit use of that resource". Rather than having a computer that's designed to be broken into, however, you have say, a record in a database or a file has no legitimate use; ergo, if anyone uses it, it must be illegitimate. An example he gives: adding a record to the hospital database for a guy named "John F. Kennedy". It doesn't correspond to a real person, so no one has any business looking at the file. If someone does access it, you know that they're abusing their privileges somehow. The article has several other clever examples, which I found very thought-provoking." They're sending out letters & when people call to clear up the confusion, DirecTV is demanding a $3500 settlement as well as the programming device. They've filed 9000 federal lawsuits against alleged pirates thus far. They're obtaining lists of who purchased the devices during raids against the sites that offer them for sale." Linux creator opens up in interview
Linus Torvalds is the creator of the Linux operating system, the open source version of Unix that is sweeping through the software world in a direct challenge to Microsoft. He spoke candidly with San Jose Mercury News staff writer Dean Takahashi about the SCO Group vs. IBM lawsuit (where Big Blue is accused of illegally putting Unix code into Linux), about Microsoft and open source development. Open source is the route to collaboration http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/17/1539224 Linux is increasingly hard to ignore, but it's only one part of the open source software (OSS) debate. Open Source Software in the Geographic and Location Industries: A Case Study http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/17/1532248 Open source software promises an attractive range of benefits: it is free, vendor independent, and open to continual evolution and improvement by a global development community. Linux Access in State and Local Government, Part V http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/17/1647255 Dallas Wayne Slade writes "The author has done an interview with Linux and OSS advocates at three local government units. This is a very personal article with people who are actually using and making Linux and OSS work in the real world. I found it fascinating and very authentic and I believe your readers will too. The interviewees are from Newport News VA, Houston, TX and Washington State. Best wishes, DW Slade"
