Darwinian Poetry: From Bad to Verse
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/25/0223217

For those who say design cannot take place through the process of     selection, behold: [0]Darwinian Poetry. Cull the prosaic or nonsensical     snippets of text, reinforce the rest, and, slowly... genius? Guess     we'll find out. Yes, the poems actually [1]have sex. Links

Flash Mobs: Peaceable Assembly for Spontaneous Fun http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/25/0146250

Schmendr1ck writes "The [0]Orlando Sentinel is carrying a story on the     growing trend of 'creating a crowd on a moment's notice for no     particular reason' knows as a [1]flash mob. Recent flash mobs     (sometimes hundreds of people) have wandered into into an upscale NYC     shoe store acting like confused tourists from Maryland, gathered at the     Hyatt near Grand Central Station for 15 seconds of spontaneous     applause, and converged on the Macy's carpet department to debate the     quality of the rugs for sale. Check [2] cheesebikini? for pictures and     info on past mobs, as well as links to sites that organize these     events. Sounds like a fun, harmless, and Constitutionally-protected way     of blowing off a little steam."

Cringely Proposes a Music Sharing Alternative http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/25/0041208

[0]WEFUNK writes "The I, Cringely 'Pulpit' column at [1]PBS presents an
interesting idea for a new business model to take on the RIAA. He     suggests that a publicly traded company could legally and profitably     buy a single copy of each record which could then be freely copied and     listened to by its shareholders under fair use. His [2]'Snapster' (Son     of Napster) proposal is essentially a digital music co-op that would     let shareholders/consumers bring copyrighted material into a     quasi-public domain. While fair use and the public domain continue to     be lost in our courts and congresses, maybe the capital markets will     offer an alternative." While a neat idea, it's doubtful that it'll ever     be implemented. Still, it's a good read. Links

Gartner Says Delay Linux Deployment Due to SCO http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/24/1734255

[0]Sridhar writes "SCO's legal threats have prompted Gartner Group to
recommend that companies delay deployment of critical Linux     applications, determine "whether Unix or Windows will provide functions     equivalent to those of Linux deployments", and [1]take a "go-slow"     approach to Linux in high-value or mission-critical production     systems."

Open Source/Proprietary - An Issue of Two Codebases? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/22/0612200

g00mba_b0y asks: "For the past year I and a small team of developers     have been working on an open source targeted, general business     application framework. I say targeted because we have not yet selected     a licensing model and placed the code in the public domain (we are     working on some specific functional targets). I recently demonstrated     the framework to a potential client who liked what they saw, and wants     to use the software for their flagship product. In addition, they want     to hire me to further the development of the framework as well as     participate in the development. The sticking point is the structure of     the legal agreement. I'm really interested in two things: the     experiences of developers who are doing something like this (how did     you address the IP issues); and links to any information on this     subject."

Perl 6 Essentials
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/24/1645236

[0]JayBonci writes "It may come as a surprise that within the pages of
'Perl 6 Essentials' lies what could be two books, despite its length.     If not for lack of cover space, it could easily bear the names "Perl6     for Perl5 programmers" and "Parrot in a Nutshell". Both topics are     concise and clearly covered, despite their relatively different     audience." Read on for the rest of Jay's review. Links
