Windows 95 in 4.47MB
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/08/0437218

[0]Silvorgold writes "BOFH of [1]MSBetas.net has been able to
[2]compress Windows 95 into 4.47 megabytes, making it the world's first
sub-5mb bootable, registry editable, command-promptable, usable version of Windows 95. He has written a small description about what he did, and also included screenshots (with his digital camera), and don't worry, these aren't fake screenshots." Links

Novell Not Dumping Netware
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/07/2253243

jerel writes "[0]eWeek describes how [1]Novell will still develop and support NetWare. The eWeek article quotes Bruce Lowry, a top spokesman for Novell as saying, 'The bottom line is no. The whole thing with Linux is an additive thing. We're not dumping NetWare, we're adding Linux.' NetWare 7.0 will allow users to either upgrade to the latest version of the NetWare kernel or move to Linux." I guess this answers any [2]lingering doubts going around. Links

Oracle's Infrastructure Now Fully Linux-ized http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/07/2233214

mbadolato writes "An article over at [0]InformationWeek reports
[1]Oracle is aggressively adopting Linux both internally and for its
products, despite SCO Group's threats earlier this week that it may sue those who don't pay licensing fees to the company. Chuck Rozwat, an Oracle executive VP, says the company has moved its IT infrastructure to Linux, a year after CEO Larry Ellis issued the mandate. In the coming year, Oracle will move its base development platform to Linux, including putting the open-source operating system on the workstations of 8,000 developers"

Disclosure of Major Software Exploits by Students? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/07/2243214

school-hacker asks: "I am a U.S. university student who has recently come across 2 remote exploits for a homework program used by colleges nationwide. Both vulnerabilities allow students to give themselves arbitrary scores, and possibly execute arbitrary code. To further emphasize the scope of this vulnerability, I have written and -selftested proof-of-concept exploit code. Naturally, I want to share this information with their software engineers, and would even be nice enough and suggest a means to fixing it. However, with the state of current intellectual property and reverse-engineering laws, I hesitate to do so out of fear of litigation or academic disciplinary action. As an ethical geek, what do -you- do?" While [0]the responses from an earlier story might prove useful, here, there is always the possibility of the university making things harder for the person reporting the problem. How can students avoid both legal and academic trouble, when trying to notify their university of security problems? Links

An Enlightened Look at an Over-Lighted World http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/07/1519236

[0]Saige writes "Every night, as darkness descends, countless street
lamps and lights turn on to keep the darkness at bay, bathing countless square feet of the planet in light that sometimes rivals daytime. But has anyone stopped to consider what effect all this light may have on people and animals that have evolved to fit an environment where a significant part of the 24 hour day is spent in lightless conditions? Some scientists have, and they are claiming that [1]all this light is causing numerous problems."

Real Money Inside in MMORPGs?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/07/1938238

Cranial writes "Sony Interactive [0]expressly forbids the selling of Everqest or Everquest II ingame items or characters for money, but why? Imagine Massively Multiplayer Games where you can actually cash out your loot in the real world. What if that jewel in the dragon hoard was actually a digital title for the Hope Diamond or a [1]real ancient artifact? This article on Programmers Heaven [2]proposes a new economic model for MM games allowing free exchange of game money and items in the real world. Essentially it is a hybridization between online gaming (casino) and MM roleplaying games. Fascinating concept." Links

SCO Media Statement Re IBM Counterclaim 08.07.03 http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/07/2350201

  • Sent by SCO's PR agency, Schwartz Communications - We view IBM’s counterclaim filing today as an effort to distract attention from its flawed Linux business model. It repeats the same unsubstantiated allegations made in Red Hat’s filing earlier this week. If IBM were serious about addressing the real problems with Linux, it would offer full customer indemnification and move away from the GPL license.
