Brazilian Government Continues Push For Free Software http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/0122230

rmello writes "The 'Legislative Free Software Week' in Brazil ended     last week, drawing 2,000 people, including 3 ministers and presidents     of congress and senate. [0]Computerworld reports (in Portuguese,
[1]translation by submitter), among other things, that 1) House of
Representatives will NOT renew MS-Office licenses, but is looking at     free software alternatives, 2) The free software parliamentary front     was announced in congress, 3) The e-mail system of the house of     representatives is being replaced by a free software one, 4) The     federal government is looking at concrete measures to stimulate free     software as means of saving money and stimulating the national software     industry. Looks like free software is here to stay in Brazil. Kudos to     the many Brazilian free software groups working to make such victories     a reality."

Osirusoft Blacklists The World
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/0214238

ariehk writes "As of today, [0]Osirusoft, distributer of the SPEWS and     open relay blocklists, among others, is [1] no longer operational.     Servers using these lists (including the [2]FTC) are currently     rejecting ALL email. This shutdown seems to be in response to a     several-week-long DDoS attack on Osirusoft, SPEWS and others, resulting     in both sites being down. This has caused [3] much discussion on     n.a.n-a.e, including the suggestion that the attack is somehow related     to the SoBig worm. The spammers must be hurting if they can devote     these kinds of resources to attacking blocklists." Read on below a     related submission.

Videogames Attract More Women Than Boys? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/014224

Thanks to Yahoo!/Reuters for their story about [0]a new Entertainment     Software Association poll showing the demographics of gaming. According     to the poll, "...26 percent of game players are women 18 or older,     while 21 percent are boys 6 to 17", and the survey also revealed that     "...the average gamer spends 6.5 hours a week playing games... while     boys 6 to 17 average 7.3 hours per week of game time." Explicit games     are also on the increase, as "13.2 percent carried a "Mature" or "M"     rating, up from 9.9 percent in 2001 and under 8 percent in 2000." Links

PanIP May Be Standing On Shaky Ground
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/2236239

[0]GoatEnigma writes "You may remember the name PanIP, the company
trying to [1] hold e-commerce hostage with their patents. Well,     according to [2]this update on the [3]PanIP Defendants site, it might     not be as easy as they thought. Apparently a little bit of successful     legal opposition has slowed down their nefarious scheme. Tim claims to     have found evidence to undermine their patents, although the article is     very short on details as to what this evidence might be..." Links

GTK+ TTY Port
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/2042206

An anonymous reader writes: "[0]FootNotes is [1]reporting about what     might be the coolest thing since [2]textmode Quake: a curses-based     GTK-2.0 port called [3]Cursed GTK. This not only makes it possible to     give Gnome the look and feel of [4]Contiki, but also brings many real     opportunities, such as remote logins where X forwarding is not     possible, or remote logins over very slow modem lines. Screenshots

Beyond Binary Computing?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/1942216

[0]daksis writes "Non base two computing [1]is nothing new. But it is
an idea that, for various reasons, never really caught on. Embedded.com     is running an op/ed piece that asks if hardware and software engineers     are [2]ready to move to ternary or quaternary logic. A move to     multi-valued logic provides more computational capability without the     standard increase in die size or transistor count. Is the need to make     do with the current fabrication technology enough to drive the move to     multi-valued logic? Or will [3]Moore's law continue without the need     for doing more with less silica based real estate?" Links

Big Company on Campus
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/1840214

Do you need more help?X

[0]Daniel Dvorkin writes "MSNBC (oh, the irony) is running a scary
article entitled [1]Microsoft's big role on campus, detailing how     Microsoft is working its way into academic computer science through a     combination of bribery and propaganda. The aricle may be overstating     the case, but it does make it sound as though MS products are     displacing others at a disturbing rate in computer science departments.     Given that academic computing has traditionally been both the source of     and the stronghold for innovative software, this is a disturbing     long-term trend."

Perfect Pitch for Those Without It
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/1710251

airrage writes "Sometimes technology is a good thing, and sometimes it     ends up in a hardware device called an [0]autotuner. Apparently, it     allows real-time pitch correction. They are actually being used at     concerts. I think we all realize that some singers sound different --     much different -- live than they do on CD's, but this just seems so,     so, what's the word: fake?"

P2P Spam?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/1638207

Sgt York writes "In a NYT article ([0]republished in the Houston     Chronicle, no subscription required) experts at [1]CERT, [2]F-secure,
[3]Trusecure, and the [4]Hall of Justice (see article) think that
SoBig.F is a spam scheme in the making. They say that SoBig.F is the     6th variant in an ongoing experiment with the possible goal of setting     up a distributed spam network, to be rented out to the highest bidder.     If that is their goal, they are well on their way. Another disturbing     note in the article is that "In the case of four of the six programs, a     new version was launched immediately after the self-timed expiration     date of the preceding one". SoBig.F expires in two weeks. " Links

Diamonds & the RIAA
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/1417214

Can we help you?X

[0]eaglebtc writes "After reading the previously-posted article on
cdfreaks.com about the [1]rapid erosion of cheap CDR's, I found another     equally scintillating write-up about [2]the economics of music CDs     written by Richard Menta, founder of [3]MP3 Newswire. Sure, we've all     heard the whining about how CDs are so expensive, but Mr. Menta takes a     unique perspective on the issue by comparing the RIAA to [4]DeBeers. He     argues that both companies control distribution of products in their     respective markets with an iron fist, and by so doing can artificially     raise prices. Coincidentally, the bubble is beginning to burst in both     markets: the RIAA is fighting against the uprisings of P2P software,     and the diamond cartel's lawyers are losing sleep over the [5]$5     diamonds produced in a lab."

Virus Storm, SCO/IBM/Linux and The BBC, US Style http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/26/1659223

Companies across the world are reporting what is probably the worst     virus outbreak ever, due to the SOBIG virus, which has struck just as     the virus Blaster was waning. SOBIG has been around for 6 months, but     it has been "mutating". Mutating is, of course a metaphor. What appears     to happen is that the virus writing community is a happy to take an     existing virus and add something and this is what happened with SOBIG,     making it more virulent than ...
