Learning to Say No in the Workplace?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/015206

Ummagumma asks: "I'm trying to find out how those of you who work in     the IT service industry, tell customers 'no', when the requests are     unreasonable for whatever reason. There is a culture here of     'piling-on' work with regards to IT - and, unfortunately, I've never     learned the proper way to tell people 'no'. It may sound simple, but in     this economy, where jobs are tough to come by, I don't want to be seen     as the impediment to getting things done Any suggestions on telling     people that their work request can wait? Especially in a way that won't     jeopardize my future here? I've searched the web, but most of the sites     that supposedly have information of this type just want you to sign up     for their seminars. I'm looking for actual, real-world experiences, and     how the people of Slashdot deal with this issue on a day-to-day basis."

Fastest US Supercomputer Runs Linux
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/2357227

[0]jgercken writes "The Department of Energy's [1]Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory has brought online [2]a 11.8 teraflops     supercomputer based on the Linux operating system, comprised of ~2,000     Itanium processors, and assembled by HP. Touted to be the fastest     unclassified computer in the US, its main duties will be atmospheric     chemistry, systems biology, catalysis and materials science." Links

Slashback: Bouncing, Taxing, Releasing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/19/2254251

Do you need help?X

Tonight's Slashback brings you more on Florida's LAN-taxation proposal,     the BBC's public archive (which won't be quite as big as you might have     hoped), one user's plea to those who respond to viruses, and more. Read     on for the details.

Walking Animatronic Dinosaur At Disney Park http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/2157251

[0]Dan Howland writes "Shades of Jurassic Park: Disney's first
walk-around, interactive animatronic character, Lucky the dinosaur, is     now [1]strolling around Disney's California Adventure, but will     probably move to Disney's Animal Kingdom in the coming weeks. It kinda     walks on two legs, just as the rumors promised, but actually pulls a     cart for additional balance (and to hide the computers). Videos can be     found on the link above. More photos, and a video of Lucky blowing his     nose [2]here."

OpenLindows.com: Wherefore Art Thou?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/1853224

[0]Joe Barr writes "I ran across a curious website recently:
OpenLindows.com. The name alone intrigued me. It gave rise to     speculation about a weird mix of free-as-in-beer and free-as-in-speech     alternative to the $99/year Click-N-Run software subscription offered     by LindowsOS, the most Windows-like/proprietary Linux distribution out     there. This is a [1]report on what I found, and perhaps even more     importantly, what I didn't."

Further Selections From the Mixed-Up SCO Files http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/1411232

[0]grahamlee writes "It may be a case of 'do as we say, not as we do'
over at the Santa Cruz Operation. The [1]Netcraft statistics meter says     that for the last year, SCO's web site has been served by [2]Apache on     Linux. Indeed, it's been more than a year since the site was ever     served from a SCO Unix machine. So what is the possible reason for     this? Your humble author suggests that SCO found themselves requiring a     multithreaded web server, and as SCO UNIX is based on an ancient     version of [3]The UNIX spec it just couldn't cope ;-)." Read on for one     of the strangest-yet turns to the SCO story, and several merely insipid     ones.

10 Terabit Ethernet By 2010
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/155237

[0]Eric Frost writes "From [1]Directions Magazine: 'Because it is now
impossible to sell networking unless it is called Ethernet (regardless     of the actual protocols used), it is likely that 1 Terabit Ethernet and     even 10 Terabit Ethernet (using 100 wavelengths used by 100 gigabit per     second transmitter / receiver pairs) may soon be announced. [2]Only a     protocol name change is needed. And the name change is merely the     acknowledgment that Ethernet protocols can tunnel through other     protocols (and vice versa).'"

Mandrake 9.2 RC1

RabidChipmunk writes "Mandrake 9.2RC1 is out. Go [0]get it with     bit-torrent and speed up my download. I like the idea that posting to     Slashdot could actually speed up a download. It seems so wrong." If     you're on a slow pipe, don't underestimate the throughput of the postal     system. Teach Yourself AppleScript in 24 Hours
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/162210

[0]honestpuck contributes this review of Sams Publishing's Teach
Yourself AppleScript in 24 Hours, writing "The market for books on     AppleScript cannot be a large one, since there never seem to be many     volumes in it; usually only one at a time is up to date and worth the     money. Now that O'Reilly's AppleScript In A Nutshell is showing its age     (and wasn't that great in the first place), and Danny Goodman's book is     even older, I was pleased to hear that this volume had come along."     Read on for honestpucks' mixed impressions of the book.    Thailand's cheap PCs 'force Microsoft's hand' http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/2244243

gulker writes "Microsoft declined to participate in Thailand's program     to offer $250 computers to citizens (whose average income is $7,000)     because it didn't want to lower the price of XP and Office. After 1     million of the machines were purchased, with Linux as the OS, MS has     relented and will now offer XP home and the standard Office suite for     $40, down from $500."

Microsoft's Friendly Foes?
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/1850202

BigBlueLinux.org writes "Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is certainly eager to     do battle with proprietors of the Linux operating system, but is it     ready to take on its hardware partners in the server space? It is a     question that has to be asked. Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) , Hewlett-Packard,     IBM (NYSE: IBM) and others are increasing platform support for Linux     server software and, in some instances, have more boxes that run Linux     than run Windows."

Lies, damn lies, and TPC cost reports
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/1743238

Recently the Transaction Processing Performance Council listed a Sun     480 as the leader on the 100GB TPC/H benchmark. At that point the Sun     machine running at 1.05GHz was shown narrowly beating a pair of 2.0 GHz     Xeon servers from HP and Dell on both price and performance. Last week     a new HP result using the 2.8GHz Xeon leapfrogged the Sun machine to     re-take the lead.

Anonymous Reader writes "This column explains how to write secure     applications; it focuses on the Linux operating system, but many of the     principles apply to any system. In today's networked world, software     developers must know how to write secure programs, yet this information     isn't widely known or taught. This first installment of the Secure     programmer column introduces the basic ideas of how to write secure     applications and discusses how to ...
