Slashdot
panhandler writes "As reported at [0]CNet and the [1]Austin American
Statesman, researchers at UT are working with IBM on a new CPU
architecture called TRIPS (Tera-op Reliable Intelligently adaptive
Processing System). According to IBM, 'at the heart of the TRIPS
architecture is a new concept called 'block-oriented execution"' which
will result in a processor capable of executing more than 1 trillion
operations per second."

cadfael writes "SCO is reported in [0]the Age as saying they '[1]Have
no plans to sue Linux companies...' This seems to contradict [2]the
earlier statements of Chris Sontag. This story also points out how
Canopy owns stakes in several other Linux companies, including Linux
Networx wheich supplied the supercomputer for Lawrence Livermore Nat
Lab. One begins to wonder if the reality of their situation has become
clear to them?" Maybe, just maybe, this is the beginning of the end of
this mess.

Reverse Engineering an MPEG Driver
An anonymous reader writes "Following on from the recent spate of
reverse engineering articles, there is an [0]interesting summary of the
reverse engineering of a binary only Linux driver. The driver is for
the integrated MPEG decoder on VIA's popular EPIA-M boards. At the
moment VIA has not publicly released the source code for the MPEG
chipset on these boards and will only make the code available under NDA
saying that "Typically, only requests from companies developing product
for sale will be approved." As a result this is holding back
development of open source tools (e.g. [1]xine, [2]mplayer, [3]vdr)
that would be able to make use of the interesting hardware on these
boards."

Today's installment is a lengthy (but hopefully informative) piece on
mirroring controllers. Ever had weird problems with a FastTrack TX2000?
Are you curious how well HighPoints RocketRAID boards are really
supported? Ever wondered which controller gives you the best
performance for every dollar spent? In true Slashdot tradition, we're
taking the issue and throwing it out to you, the readers.

SCO DOS Harming Innocent Bystanders
An anonymous reader writes "The SCO-IBM-Linux controversy has certainly caused quite a stir. Unfortunately the vigilantes conducting the DOS attacks against SCO are [0]harming innocent by-standers as described in this e-Week story. " Choice conspiracy theory quote: 'Given SCO's behavior recently, it's just as likely that they're attacking themselves in their continued attempt to pump up their stock price' Links 0. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1233231,00.asp
Auerbach on Internet Cruft
Captain Beefheart writes "[0]Karl Auerbach has a story on CircleID in which he declares '...Between spam, anti-spam blacklists, rogue packets, never-forgetting search engines, viruses, old machines, bad regulatory bodies, and bad implementations, [1]I fear that the open Internet is going to die sooner than I would have expected.' The Balkanization of the 'Net appears to be upon us." Blocking Kazaa traffic with Linux/IPTables firewal, http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/2320207 Chris Lowth writes "The "p2pwall" project has developed a GPL add-in for iptables based firewalls that allows blocking of traffic to and from "Fast-Track" software such as "Kazaa", Kazaa-lite, iMesh and grokster. The software is designed for use in "permissive" firewall configurations where home-net hosts are permitted more or less unlimited access to the public internet, but are protected from in-bound connections. Ftwall adds logic to such ...
Linux Moves Behind the Screen
Linux, the fast growing and freely available operating system, looks like the software of choice for future televisions, set-top boxes and DVD recorders, consumer electronics executives and specialists said.
IBM Doubles Its Linux Reward
IBM is upping the incentives to partners who sell Linux solutions. Last month, the company rolled out a program dubbed "Double Your Discount with Linux" as part of its Value Advantage Plus Initiative for ISVs and VARs. Participants in the program are now eligible for up to a 60 percent discount on IBM software (double the existing resales incentive) when they use that software to create Linux-based solutions for midsize companies. The program ...
Linux to make consumer-electronics buzz
Linux, the fast-growing and freely available operating system, is set to be the software of choice for future televisions, set top boxes and DVD recorders, according to consumer-electronics executives and specialists on Thursday.
Of monkeys and penguins
SCO, for anyone who has never heard of the company, is pronounced "skoh", as in Scopes. Indeed "the SCO case" of 2003 sounds increasingly like the famous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which pitted religious fundamentalists against progressives wanting to teach Darwin alongside the Bible in American classrooms.
Microsoft 'hiding behind Linux'
gulker writes "ZDNet UK says that even Microsoft can't defend itself from massive DDoS and other problems resulting from security flaws its own products without relying on Linux - in the form of Akamai's distributed serving system."
Why use CIFS with Linux? Why not?
Michael S. Mimoso writes "In this interview, Samba Team member Chris Hertel explains the benefits and limitations of the Common Internet File System (CIFS) for an enterprise Linux shop." gcc/glibc cross toolchains for embedded development http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/194235 Building a gcc / glibc cross-toolchain for use in embedded systems development used to be a scary prospect, requiring iron will, days if not weeks of effort, lots of Unix and Gnu lore, and sometimes willingness to take dodgy shortcuts. This is a problem not only for individual users, but also for the gcc project as a whole, since the gcc team relies on users to test upcoming releases of gcc, and the difficulty of building the toolchain for ... Linux, Mac OS added to Federal Enterprise Architecture platforms http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/1739230 The Office of Management and Budget added Linux and Mac OS to the list of supporting platforms under the Technical Reference Model of the Federal Enterprise Architecture.
