Four Core Processor to Bring Tera Ops
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/29/0138205

panhandler writes "As reported at [0]CNet and the [1]Austin American     Statesman, researchers at UT are working with IBM on a new CPU     architecture called TRIPS (Tera-op Reliable Intelligently adaptive     Processing System). According to IBM, 'at the heart of the TRIPS     architecture is a new concept called 'block-oriented execution"' which     will result in a processor capable of executing more than 1 trillion     operations per second."

SCO Says It Has No Plan To Sue Linux Companies http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/29/0416253

cadfael writes "SCO is reported in [0]the Age as saying they '[1]Have     no plans to sue Linux companies...' This seems to contradict [2]the     earlier statements of Chris Sontag. This story also points out how     Canopy owns stakes in several other Linux companies, including Linux     Networx wheich supplied the supercomputer for Lawrence Livermore Nat     Lab. One begins to wonder if the reality of their situation has become     clear to them?" Maybe, just maybe, this is the beginning of the end of     this mess.

Computer Game Improves Children's Hearing http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/29/019241

[0]wiredbeat2000 writes "The BBC is running a story that claims
[1]children who play video games increase their hearing skills. There
have been several studies over the last few months extolling the     virtues of games and education. For example, Wired News ran a [2]     roundup of college programs, and USA Today published a recent story on
[3]Daphne Bavelier's findings that playing games could help children
develop hand-eye coordination, in addition to Professor James Gee's     Slashdot-covered [4]video transcript and [5]article on 'games that     teach'." Things have come a long way since the time when schoolkids     were dumped in front of a computer and left to play Oregon Trail. Links

Reverse Engineering an MPEG Driver
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/29/0052217

An anonymous reader writes "Following on from the recent spate of     reverse engineering articles, there is an [0]interesting summary of the     reverse engineering of a binary only Linux driver. The driver is for     the integrated MPEG decoder on VIA's popular EPIA-M boards. At the     moment VIA has not publicly released the source code for the MPEG     chipset on these boards and will only make the code available under NDA     saying that "Typically, only requests from companies developing product     for sale will be approved." As a result this is holding back     development of open source tools (e.g. [1]xine, [2]mplayer, [3]vdr)     that would be able to make use of the interesting hardware on these     boards."

Blocker Tags to Protect Privacy From RFID Tags http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/2226204

geekee writes "According to an article at [0]CNET, [1]RSA Security is
[2]developing a 'blocker' tag that disrupts RFID tag transmissions,
protecting a person's privacy from those who would abuse RFID     technology. The blocker tag would be embedded in your watch, for     instance. This method has an advantage over destroying the RFID tags     after purchase because useful information on the tag could help     consumers (e.g. laundry instructions)." According to the RSA scientist     quoted in the article, privacy concerns regarding RFID have been     overblown, but it's still worth being proactive when finding ways to     defeat the tags.

Mirroring Controllers - What have been Your Experiences? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/2143208

Today's installment is a lengthy (but hopefully informative) piece on     mirroring controllers. Ever had weird problems with a FastTrack TX2000?     Are you curious how well HighPoints RocketRAID boards are really     supported? Ever wondered which controller gives you the best     performance for every dollar spent? In true Slashdot tradition, we're     taking the issue and throwing it out to you, the readers.
[0]Futurepower(R) is willing to start us off with a wealth of
information on his experiences, and I'm hoping a few of you are willing     to do the same.

IBM Releases Compiler for Power4 and G5
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/1746213

[0]davids-world.com writes "IBM offers its optimized XLC compiler not
just for Intel CPUs, but also for its own G5 processor (article in     German at [1]Heise). Unlike gcc, it is optimized for the G5 and     achieves a major boost in speed, as first [2]results show. I guess we     will have to compare the new benchmark data (once available) with the     data we get with the optimized Intel compiler for Xeon. The compiler is     available for [3]download now."

Blocking Kazaa traffic with Linux/IPTables firewal, http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/2320207

Chris Lowth writes "The "p2pwall" project has developed a GPL add-in     for iptables based firewalls that allows blocking of traffic to and     from "Fast-Track" software such as "Kazaa", Kazaa-lite, iMesh and     grokster. The software is designed for use in "permissive" firewall     configurations where home-net hosts are permitted more or less     unlimited access to the public internet, but are protected from     in-bound connections.      IBM is upping the incentives to partners who sell Linux solutions.     Last month, the company rolled out a program dubbed "Double Your     Discount with Linux" as part of its Value Advantage Plus Initiative for     ISVs and VARs. Participants in the program are now eligible for up to a     60 percent discount on IBM software (double the existing resales     incentive) when they use that software to create Linux-based solutions     for midsize companies.      SCO, for anyone who has never heard of the company, is pronounced     "skoh", as in Scopes. gcc/glibc cross toolchains for embedded development http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/28/194235

Building a gcc / glibc cross-toolchain for use in embedded systems     development used to be a scary prospect, requiring iron will, days if     not weeks of effort, lots of Unix and Gnu lore, and sometimes     willingness to take dodgy shortcuts. This is a problem not only for     individual users, but also for the gcc project as a whole, since the     gcc team relies on users to test upcoming releases of gcc, and the     difficulty of building the toolchain for ...
