Slashdot
dave420 writes "The BBC has an [0]article outlining plans in India to
use GPS technology to alert train drivers of obstructions on the
tracks, automatically stopping the train if the driver fails to take
action. This sounds like a good use of cheaply-available technology to
provide a safer train network."

Essay Grading Software For Teachers
asjk writes "Software to help teachers with grading has been around for
sometime. This is true even with respect to grading essays. A new tool,
called [0]Criteria, will look at grammar, usage, and even style and
organization. It works by being trained by at least 450 essays scored
by two professionals. The difference this time? Here is a snip from the
article: '"There's a lot of skepticism," Dr. Spatola said. "The people
opposed see it dehumanizing the student's papers, putting them through
some sort of mechanical, computerized system like the multiple choice
tests. That's really not the case, because we're not talking about
eliminating the human element. We're making the process more
efficient."'"

More Criticism of SCO's Claims To UNIX
inc_x writes "[0]GROKLAW has a [1]compelling analysis that shows that
SCO's claims that it owns the UNIX operating system are not very
truthful. [2]The Open Group [3]confirms this position: "Statements that
SCO "owns the UNIX operating system" or has "licensed UNIX to XYZ", are
clearly inaccurate and misleading." It seems that SCO finds it
increasingly difficult to distinguish facts from fiction. Last week SCO
claimed 'This IP battle is only one part of SCO's business and is an
add-on component. The core of SCO's business is profitable,' not
bothered by the fact that they had [4]claimed the opposite in their SEC
filing: 'If we do not receive SCOsource licensing revenue in future
quarters and our revenue from the sale of our operating system platform
products and services continues to decline, we will need to further
reduce operating expenses in order to maintain profitability or
generate positive cash flow.'"

Pentium-M In Mini-ITX Format
Hektor_Troy writes "A German outfit is going to [0]introduce a
Pentium-M based mini-ITX board. Finally good performance in a small
size. The manufacturer claims it can be cooled pasively, but I'd like
to see it first." "[1]Good performance in a small size" is relative, of
course -- I like the quiet little EPIA system in front of me pretty
well ;)

RIAA Parses 'P2P' As 'Peer 2 Porn'
watchful.babbler writes "Having largely failed to galvanize public and political action against P2P systems, the RIAA has [0]mounted a campaign to link P2P systems with child pornography (NYT, reg. required). The result is H. R. 2885 ([1]available via Thomas), which has the remarkably clear and honest intent 'To prohibit the distribution of peer-to-peer file trading software in interstate commerce.' Amongst other things, the proposed law will require the creation of 'do-not-install beacon products' (do-not-ask, you really don't want to know), force P2P apps to include warning labels that users may be exposed to pornography, and require P2P developers and distributors to obtain and store users' personal information -- ostensibly for age verification, but one can think of other reasons that the RIAA might be interested in that info. Worse yet, even given the 'operation exemption' (Sec. (4)(b)(1)(C) in the bill), applications such as AIM and iChat appear to fall under these provisions." A.Guru prasath writes "Companies with products that work on the Internet are slowly waking up to the broad implications of a recent judgement against software behemoth Microsoft Corp. in a patent infringement case. The $520 million award to Eolas Technologies Inc. of Chicago and the University of California (UC) stemmed from a 1999 lawsuit in which Eolas and UC charged Microsoft with infringing on a 1998 patent owned by the university and ... Microsoft and Be, Inc. reach agreement to settle lawsuit http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/1310249 Anonymous Reader writes "Remember the Be lawsuit against Microsoft? The lawsuit alleged that Microsoft harmed Be through a series of illegal exclusionary and anticompetitive acts designed to maintain its monopoly in the Intel-compatible PC OS market and created exclusive dealing arrangements with PC OEMs prohibiting the sale of PCs with multiple preinstalled operating systems. Pretty much what MS does today to Linux vendors! Be and MS announced ... Speculation on a Microsoft strategy to co-opt Linux http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/138200 pbrittan writes "I have recently posted two entries in my blog exploring how Microsoft might be able to turn the tables on Java and co-opt Linux: .NET on Linux, .NET on Linux, part 2 - "It's the API, stupid"" Linux for Windows administrators with Delixus 8.0 http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/133246 MadPenguin writes "Delixus 8.0 makes administering a Linux server almost seamless to the Windows environment most people are used to. Even though I would not be inclined to use the software, I would recommend it to clients who would like to make the switch to Linux but do not have the appropriate amount of 'Linux knowledge' in-house, or who simply lack the budget to acquire that knowledge through training or hiring capable staff."
openMosix 2.4.22-1 released
Bruce Knox, openMosix Project writes "The openMosix Project has announced the release of openMosix version 2.4.22-1. Politics in Free Software
Microsoft steps up Linux assault with benchmark claim http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/05/1531208 OwlWhacker writes "Microsoft has released file and web server benchmark results which claim to show that Linux on the mainframe lags behind Windows 2003 on Intel systems in a price-performance comparison."
Data visualization using Perl/Tk
Anonymous Reader writes "Generating a visual representation is often the best way to understand large data sets, but standard tools such as gnuplot often fall short. This article shows how to use Perl/Tk, the standard GUI toolkit for Perl, to quickly build custom plotting and graphing tools."
SCO in fight with self
Anonymous Reader writes "Since at least August, SCO have been floating the idea of sending invoices to Linux users. It's even been reported, seemingly incorrectly, back in August, that SCO was beginning to send invoices. The invoice story has been taken up with a vengence in the last few days, for example, here, here and here. Now SCO in Australia says the invoicing plan doesn't "ring true" and contradicts recent very strategy discussions. ... Germans Have It Right, Standing Up to SCO! http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/05/1837213 Jim Musser writes "SCO fined for Linux claims." The SCO Group Inc. has been fined $10,800 for violating a German court's ruling that SCO must cease claiming that the Linux source code violates its intellectual property, the Lindon, Utah, company confirmed on Monday.
