Xbox Auto-Update Blocks Linux Usage
An anonymous reader writes "According to [0]The Inquirer, Microsoft has
used their Xbox Live Vole System to patch any Xboxes that access
it....without asking their permission before installing the software.
However, in this occurrence, the bug appears to be the 'dashboard bug'
that allows Linux to be easily installed on an Xbox. Further, according
to [1]The Xbox Linux Project, users who do not have an Xbox Live
account may find themselves being patched without permission as well.
If a gamer tries to access any part of a game that uses Xbox Live, the
console can 'phone home' and install the patches anyway. While patching
bugs can be a nice touch to poor software, I don't know if I feel
comfortable with ANYONE installing software on my hardware without
asking permission first."

Does C# Measure Up?
An anonymous reader queries: "Windows::Developer is offering [0]a detailed, quantitative examination [free login required] of C#'s performance versus Java, C, C++ and D. 'Overall the results were surprising, although perhaps unexciting, in showing that C# (and to a less extent Java) is, to a good degree, on a par in efficiency terms with its older and (presumed to be) more efficient counterparts C and C++ at least as far as the basic language features compared in this analysis are concerned,' writes the author, Matthew Wilson. I'm only an amateur coder, and confess to not understanding most of the two-part article. I'd love to hear how true programmers view his results, which are too wide-ranging to summarize easily here. How about it Slashdot, as this special edition asks, 'Can C# keep up with compiled languages like C, C++, and D or byte-code based Java?'" Links 0. http://www.windevnet.com/wdn/webextra/2003/0313/
Can You Raed Tihs?
An aoynmnuos raeedr sumbtis: "An interesting tidbit from [0]Bisso's blog site: Scrambled words are legible as long as first and last letters are in place. Word of mouth has [1]spread to [2]other [3]blogs, and [4]articles as well. From the languagehat site: 'Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe. ceehiro.' Jamie Zawinski has also [5]written a perl script to convert normal text into text where letters excluding the first and last are scrambled." Links

Microsoft vs. Linux: The Battle for Belief http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/1921255 Linux operates like a young religion. Many of the underlying concepts are similar to those of a commune. Ownership of key assets is avoided, the community works and shares in the results of its labor, and there is an avid and active hate for the competing capitalistic model -- in this case exemplified by Microsoft. Wireless: not just closed source anymore http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/1915231 The trend toward open source software, so prevalent in the world of wired computing and telecommunications, has exerted less influence to date on the wireless world. That is changing, though, according to an article at IBM's Developer Works describing the open source landscape as it relates to wireless technologies. Linux-based onboard "gateway server" remotely pilots model airplane http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/198221 This whitepaper from Intrinsyc describes how engineers at IBM's Pervasive Computing Advanced Technology Laboratory created an embedded Linux based intelligent, high-level remote control system for a model airplane as a way to showcase Gateway Server technology.

Verisign, it seems, is about to implement a new plan of redirecting all browser queries to non-resolving domain names in COM and NET to Verisign's own SiteFinder page.
Sun exec: Open-source is irrelevant
Last weekend, I went to go look up a patent filing at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). It was a really engaging experienceit's a fascinating site, with filings dating back to 1790. Just for yuks, I decided to explore what it takes to file a patent. I was in for a rude surprise: The site, and the PTO, demand that all online patent applications be submitted using Microsoft Word. USB On-The-Go moves forward via compliance program http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/1828214 The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) rolled out a comprehensive USB On-The-Go (OTG) compliance program today, including compliance test documentation, Certified USB On-The-Go logos, and compliance test tools to assist companies in preparing for certification testing for their hand-held devices. New GPL-Shopping-Cart-Software published http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/180235 Thorsten Körner writes "The 123tkShop-Project has released their new Version of the openSource e-Commerce-Suite on Friday, at http://www.123tkShop.org. A Demo-Shop is up at http://demo.123tkShop.org. The new Version comes with much new Features and Enhencements." Microsoft blow as Ford signs up for Linux http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/202230 Anonymous Reader writes ""FORD is joining the ranks ... that have switched from Microsoft software to the free open-source alternative Linux." It's not clear, but the implication is that Ford (Europe?) is making a foray into Linux desktops. See also The Register's report of the Scotsman.com article."
