protohiro1 writes "In this [0]glowing review Chris Gulker calls Sun's
[1] Java Desktop System 'the most polished and real-world user-ready
Linux desktop in existence.' Well, I'm sold. Will this finally sell the     PHBs on a linux corporate desktop?" Newsforge and Slashdot are both     part of OSDN.

PHP Usage in the Enterprise

[0]acostin writes "Some open survey results were published about PHP
usage in the enterprise on the [1]InterAKT site. An alternative survey     on the PHP open source mouvement can be found on [2]Zend site. See how     we've evaluated the PHP market size($$$), what people think about PHP     as an alternative to Java and .NET, and what should be done in order to     have your large clients adopt open source solutions." Next-gen PCMCIA: Expresscard
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/19/2119201

An anonymous reader writes "According to [0]this article at     WindowsForDevices, the PCMCIA trade association rolled out version 1.0     of its next-generation standard for modular mobile and desktop computer     expansion at this week's Intel Developer Forum in San Jose, CA. Dubbed     "ExpressCard", the new standard is "thinner, lighter, faster" than the     group's previous PC Card standards, according to PCMCIA chairman Brad     Saunders. ExpressCard achieves its space reduction by replacing the     legacy parallel buses of the first and second generation PCMCIA card     standards with state-of-the-art, high-speed serial connections,     following a trend common in current computer system design." P2P Filesharing vs. The Web
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/19/216230

[0]The Importance of writes "The recent RIAA lawsuits have raised
[1]many questions and [2]issues, but the focus has been on P2P
filesharing. Before there was P2P, though, there was filesharing via     webservers. There doesn't seem to be much complaint about the RIAA     shutting down people who upload MP3s to their homepage. Why do many     people seem to treat http filesharing different than P2P filesharing?
[0]LawMeme has [3]one answer."

Telstar 4 is Down
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/19/1920234

An anonymous reader writes "Sometime this morning (Sept. 19) [0]Telstar     4 had a major onboard failure. I just checked a few minutes ago and     there are CW carriers up on 11700 MHz V & 12200 MHz H, so the     spacecraft would appear to still be in its orbital slot - just no     traffic. The [1]Loral Skynet site has no mention of this yet, but     supposedly Telstar 8 was already scheduled to replace T4, so they may     just speed the process up. This turn of events will no doubt be of some     small concern to [2]Intelsat, who recently agreed to [3]purchase most     of Loral's US domestic fleet, including T4." Links
