Noise?
You'd like a Sun Blade-2000 then. Good ducting design inside
combined with decent fans that vary their speed depending
on ambient conditions result in a very fast computer with
a very quiet sound.
As far as an x86 low-end box, a year back Fry's electronics
had a special on a $200 box with a Via C3 in it, passive heat
sink on the CPU, and very small PS with quiet fan on it.
Been running it with Linux for over a year as an email
honeypot and Samba. Works fine. They seem to offer this
budget box once a year, a few weeks after Christmas.
The only budget box I can find there now (www.outpost.com
is their online store) is:
http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3541744#detailed
A $179 box sans CPU, RAM, and HD.
Oh wait, here it is (now up to $249):

Uses the Via C3 Samuel GigaPro 733MHz CPU.
Just blow away the "ThizLinux" and run.
Regards, Scott
