Yes, the hardware probing is independent of the bios settings. However, you can not use that 80gb disk as the boot disk. Most PCs from the late 90's, or more precisely older PCs with lba translation[1], won't recognize discs over 32GB. To solve this you can 1. Do as you did, boot from another disc. 2. Upgrade your bios. This will fix most systems with flashable bioses. 3. Limit the HD to 32GB. Most, if not all HDs have a jumper to do this.
