Doug,

	If it is a hardware problem then perform a Solaris install
	on a disk and try to duplicate the problem.

	The Quad Fast Ethernet is a long developed NIC that is
	based on the happymeal ethernet (hme) ASIC, which was the
	foundation of many 1000's of Sun Microsystem's systems.

	So, I doubt it is a hardware problem with the NIC.

	Very long or eratic pings can be indicative of routing
	problems, collisions which result in backoff delays, etc.

	Note: I have not looked and do not plan to comment on any
	BSD drivers for Sun hardware.
