 I would guess that you have a newer snapshot on the i386 machine than  on the sparc64.  

 $ uname -rm
 3.3 i386
 $ egrep -f /etc/passwd /etc/passwd
 Memory fault (core dumped)
 $  

 Just cvs upped and recompiled and it does not core any longer so I  guess this has been fixed already.
