Setting Modelines (faq11 directions don't appear to work)

Hello all,

I'm running OpenBSD 3.2 with XFree86 4.2.

I read the FAQ here: http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq11.html but this makes reference to /etc/XF86Config, which does not exist on my machine, nor within /etc/X11 or subdirectories thereof. I do find an XF86Config.new in my home directory.

I have a Matrox Millenium G400 with 32MB and a ViewSonic VA550 15" LCD.

I used XF86cfg to generate the basic XF86Config.new file. Startx works, but generates some fuzziness. I used xvidtune to adjust the screen and printed out the modeline:

"1024x768" 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync

I read the man page for XF86Config, and added the modeline above to /root/XF86Config.new

Section "Monitor"

	Identifier	"Monitor0"
	VendorName	"Monitor Vendor"
	ModelName "Monitor Model"

ModeLine "1024x768" 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync EndSection
Do you need help?X

I exited FVVM and restarted X, but had the same wobbly screen.

I looked through the archives, reading this message:

http://xfree86.org/pipermail/newbie/2002-September/017300.html

But I haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong.

My questions:

  1. How do I set the proper modeline? Or should I set something else?
  2. How do I set the default resolution (my laptop runs XF86 fine, but at 8-bit resolution)

I asked this question on the XFree86Newbies list, without results. If there's a pointer to another FAQ, or I misinterpreted something (although I read it over a couple of times before asking here), let me know.
