It comes to mind that some hard drives (I think Seagate might have been one of them - Maxtor was a big offender) has a jumper setting called "Single Drive", and when you removed the jumper entirely, then it worked. Apparently the HD was searching for another drive, even though it was the only drive in the system.

The reverse, of course, was also a problem - if you had two drives and the HD was set to "only drive", then it wreaked all kinds of havoc.

Just my .02 - remembered after long head-banging sessions with the wall before I found out about this setting. :)
