Subject: Bandwidth usage

Greetings,

I've just set myself up with an openBSD 3.2 box as my gateway, and I'm trying to figure out how to get it to tell me how much traffic has passed
through its external interface so I can monitor my network usage and stop
myself from getting huge bills from my ISP.

Anyways, as I'm rather new to all this (2 whole weeks) I've been reading a
lot of stuff on the net about all sorts of things. The one thing I haven't
been able to figure out is how to get this bandwidth monitoring going. I've
started trying to set up ipfm & mrtg but got lost and confused.

Could any of you people out there please explain how I can get a bandwidth
monitor running. I'd like to be able to get some sort of web interface that
has something easy to understand (preferably with graphs) so I can stop my
fiancee from downloading too much.

I've so far been able to figure out everything else except this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards
Dave.

Dave,

Do you need help?X

While there are NUMEROUS utilities out there that can do this and do this EXCEPTIONALLY well with tremendous detail, off the top of my head and open-sourced, symon and ntop come to mind. For my (modest) needs I have taken advantage of the beautifully simple work done by Daniel Hartmeier... http://www.benzedrine.cx/pfstat.html. If you think this will "fit your bill," I'd be happy to assist if you have any questions about this tool.

Cheers,
