you will see there WAS a history of using a d(a)emon character (though not always "cute") in the art, but around the 2.6 release, the mascot changed/evolved to the blowfish now used...

Hey, different is fun. 8-)

OpenBSD is very definitely not based on "they do it, therefor, we shall too". A bit of distinction is a good thing. This way, when someone says "Well, in Linux/FreeBSD/NetBSD it is done this way", we can skin them alive with clear conscience that it wasn't an easy to understand mistake. 8-)
