I believe your problem has nothing to do with OpenBSD. =)

Let's see what the name service says.

Name: yahoo.com
Addresses: 64.58.79.230, 66.218.71.198

Name: www.yahoo.akadns.net
Addresses: 64.58.76.176, 64.58.76.177, 64.58.76.178, 64.58.76.179

          64.58.76.222, 64.58.76.223, 64.58.76.226, 64.58.76.227, 64.58.76.228
          64.58.76.229, 64.58.76.230, 64.58.76.231

So, as you can see, there are quite a few servers behind the name www.yahoo.com, and two behind yahoo.com. This means that if you ping www.yahoo.com, you may actually ping *any* of the IP-addresses mentioned above, resulting in random results depending on which server(s) happen to be down:
