Have you checked if you have enabled arts-server ? The problem you describe sounds like xmms owns the device, kmail try to play a sound, this launches arts-server which waits for the device and don't let it go right away after the sound is played. If it is this kind of interaction, you might want to try the xmms arts output plugin (well, I suppose it is not such a good idea as xmms and arts are cpu hogs).
