That is virtuser - mapping any valid incoming mail address to a local user or another email address.

Don't confuse the mailbox name with the login - they nor related. The UID/PW is set for the OS, .. the mailbox is set in sendmail.

There is also an 'oubound' mapping in generics translating the UID to a 'formal' email address for outgoing mail.
