I am not the first OpenBSD developer to write to you today. I can say little that has not been said before. I can only express that I am very surprised, and shocked, by the behavior I see. I will not speculate about why the funding was cut, or try to justify why this money, especially for the Hyatt hotel, is of great benefit. For the former, I don't think it matters, and for the latter, I think the accomplishments of past hackathons speak clearly. When I speak of money, I am refering to the 80% contractual fee that must be paid to the Hyatt. Money spent is money spent. That the grant is ended should impede reaping benefits from the money already allocated and spent. If the grant was cut short, then so be it, but allow us to make some use of it. The forced cancellation is only wasteful, with no positive gain. You have supported this project, along with others, for this long. Why suddenly turn vengeful? It is clear to all parties that the money for the hotel cannot be returned, recouped, or reused. It can serve one purpose only, housing OpenBSD developers, or no purpose at all. You have nothing to gain, but we have much to lose. Your actions can only be described as small and vindictive. Perhaps you are not the ones making this decision. No other person has been suggested however, and from all accounts, you are the ones with the authority to make this decision. I cannot fathom how requiring the hotel to bill OpenBSD full price makes things better for you. If you cannot cannot release the money, which has already been spent, for us to make use of, can you at least enlighten us? Why is it so critical that the voluneteers of the OpenBSD project must not benefit?
Disappointed,
