/dev/sound is just a link to sound0, which is really audio0. audio0 is the first real sound card in the computer. you have, as far as the kernel is concered, no sound cards. so audio0 (aka /dev/sound) is not configured.

the little speaker that makes beeps is not a real audio device. /dev/sound is not attached to it.

reminder that there are lots of files in /dev that are not likely to be configured. i have an st0 and st1 on my laptop, which doesn't have any tape drives attached to it. if you don't see "audio0 at" in your dmesg, /dev/sound is not going to work.
