I had the same problem with OpenBSD 3.1 and the netatalk (OpenBSD 3.2) port. I solved it by installing the netatalk package handish (I mean: (1) I untarred it, (2) I did a ./configure (3) I did a make (4) I did a make install). Maybe it works in your case, too. :) The port maintainer knows of the timestamp and stability problem.
