Phase 2 is the default, assuming the code ain't broke

saying

nge0
or
nge0 -phase 2

are exactly the same thing.

If things are not showing up in the chooser and the like i'd suspect that the multicast support of the nge driver is broke.

You can test this out by putting nge0 into promiscious mode. If things work, i'd bet it's a driver issue.
