shared libraries naming

Heya,
I'm currently working on a port of dmalloc-4.8.2. Now, by default dmalloc's shared libs use an .so extension instead of an .so.X.X and with this ld won't pick up the shared libraries. So, to what should I change the shared library's name, should it be .so.4.82, .so.48.2 or simply .so.0.0?
