Agree. I expericenced the same thing. ftp is especially weak when network latency and bandwith is low. I usually use wget ( -c --passive options) and ncftp, those works better under my conditions (analog modem - 56 Kb, priced by connection time), but have not lost any connections. Before - I lost connections, but switched to an another ISP. So you may try an other ISP or fine-tune your ppp.conf?
