I'm not sure I understand. I haven't fiddled with the font settings at all. Also, I originally only looked at UTF-8 encoding. I've now fed gtk2edit a piece of spam whose "russkij variant" is in CP1251 and this is handled fine, too.

If a font is encoded incorrectly, it will screw up. Isn't "Symbol" well-known to incorrectly map characters from all over to 0..255? Sorry, I'm simply don't know this MS Windows stuff.
