Re: libshout-2.0 and ices-0.3?

Hi,

ports@openbsd.org isn't the right place to discuss streaming problems with Icecast - I'm CCing this only, because I hope the following might be of general interest.

Icecast v1.* is deprecated and unsupported, but it might still be possible to get some help by fellow users on the icecast mailing list icecast(at)xiph.org. Refer to http://www.icecast.org/ and http://www.xiph.org/archives/ for more information, like the list archives and how to subscribe.

The current and supported version of the Icecast server is icecast-2.0-alpha2, available via CVS and nightly snapshots on icecast.org. It supports both MP3 and Ogg Vorbis streaming and despite its version name and lack of an official release, it does its job very well and stable. Many have it in production use, for example Virgin Radio UK: http://www.virginradio.co.uk/thestation/listen/index.html (they use ices2 and icecast2 for their Vorbis stream).

At this point, the nightly snapshots expire after 7 days, but "milestone snapshots" that remain are planned. Until then, the OpenBSD port can't be updated/enhanced, but I can tell that those snapshots build right out of the box on OpenBSD, so that's not a real issue.

Also note that only ices (both v0 and v2) require libshout2, the icecast servers don't use it.

Do you need help?X

No, a soundcard is not required unless you want to stream live audio, in which case the box running the source client should have ways to sample and encode the stuff.

Otherwise there's little help I can give as you don't really tell what's wrong. Ices and Icecast have their logfiles that should give you pointers. Also make sure that you use the correct protocol - Icecast v1 uses something odd called "icy", while Icecast v2 does standard HTTP. "shout" is for Shoutcast.

I should also note that I'm not familiar with Icecast1, v2 is the only version I use (MP3 streams sound awful ;P).

This might add to the trouble - the CPU usage of an Icecast server is negligible, but re-encoding is expensive. If your old i386 hardware can't safely encode in realtime, you're out of luck. Have a faster box be the source client... that can be ices or darkice on *BSD or Linux, or Oddcast DSP + Winamp (www.oddsock.org) on Windows (or Oddcast DSP + XMMS), just to name a few.
