The patch included in RH7.3 is just to remove the stripwhitespace() call from pico.c:219. (The package is named "pine-4.33-15".) The same patch is still included in RH9, where the package is labelled "pine-4.44-18". I see no evidence that RedHat has spent even one iota of thought to ask "is it a good idea for us to fail to merge patches upstream, for 3 years and longer?"

FWIW, Debian does not include this patch.
