I'm not sure why this was necessary but it may be a result of the following: Since I'm running short of disk space I mounted an ext2 partition as /usr/ports. Here is the line from fstab:

/dev/wd0k /usr/ports ext2fs rw,nodev 0 0

Is there anything here that would make shared libraries unusable from this partition?
