Thanks for taking the correct action.

Under copyright law (which is automatic even if the author does not make a declaration), the author retains the rights. We cannot distribute such things.

I wish that people reacting to the evil in the GPL would at least pay a bit more attention, and properly react, by properly making their things free.

That means make it public domain (revoke all rights) or do the BSD/ISC-like thing of "revoking all rights but to be known as the author".
