[OpenBSD 3.3]

Using XDM, I logging in and the GNOME splash loaded and an error was produced.

"The settings Daemon restarted too many times.

 The last error message was:

 Failed to execute gnome-settings-daemon: 9 (no such file or directory)

GNOME will try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in."

.xsession-errors output:

"SESSION_MANAGER=local/puffy.someplace.com:/tmp/.ICE-unix/30328 Loaded background '0x111f00

Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1
Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1

Do you need help?X

No errors found in .xdm-errors

Anyone know a fix for this?

my .xsession file:

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/local/bin/gnome-session

(apparently, xdm was unable to locate gnome-sessions. Adding the path resolved that problem.)

Thanks.

  1. Open .xsession in your favourite editor
  2. Type in this (without indentation)

#!/bin/sh -l
exec gnome-session

3. Save the file and exit the editor
4. Make .xsession executable and readable

chmod a+rx .xsession

5. FWIW, the default window manager is not bad at all if you know how to customise it. But go ahead and enjoy the speed of Gnome.

Best regards,
