Assembler Messages: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: `.section'

Hello,

        I am trying to compile avi-xmms-1.2.3 and am getting an assember error. The error is as follows:

gcc -c ./stubs.s -o stubs.lo
./stubs.s: Assembler messages:
./stubs.s:4: Error: Unknown pseudo-op:  `.section'

gmake[3]: *** [stubs.lo] Error 1

        Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?? I've run 'as -o stubs.lo stubs.s' separetely and it gives the same error. Any and all help would be appreciated. I've googled and searched the archives with no help so far. Thank you in advance.
