Data accessible in kernel and userland

Hi all,
I am working on a research project that requires a set of data that is accessible from userland, and also from within kernel code. My first thought is to define a new device, and ioctl's to get/set the data. This works fine from userland, but how do I access it from within kernel code.
I am under the impression that opening files, and other file related interfaces
are not available to kernel code.

If there is perhaps another way, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks,
