Well, I suppose it depends how pedantic you want to be. No doubt
they mean the OS's "format" command as opposed to the device's
format command. However, modern SCSI disks don't necesarily do
anything more than a surface scan when you tell them to format
themselves. Of course, as these were almost certainly DOS machines
the most they probably had down was the DOS format command which,
in non-paleolithic versions at least, is completely reversible.
Heck, the paleolithic version is probably reversible too w/o too
much trouble too.
