And it appears to only be the Proliant 5500 that the driver from 3.3 doesn't work on. I put a card I had breaking in the Proliant in a random Dell machine and it works fine with stock 3.3. Interestingly, it kernel panics with stock 3.2, or my 3.3 kernel with cac(4) changes backed out. (ps and trace available if anyone thinks they'll be useful, but it's the old driver, so I doubt anyone will be interested).

If anyone has any insight, I'd love to hear about it.

TIA. dmesg for both machines below. I've tried this in the Proliant without the iha0 card with the same results. The only thing left to remove is the fxp0, and I intend to do that on the weekend, but I'm not hopeful there.
