Report on ICH5, em and RNG

From: Alexandre H <openbsdah(at)wanadoo.fr>

Read my first post "Questions about porting 3.3 on 875P (ICH5, 82547)" sent the 2003/05/29 to this mailing-list (tech@openbsd.org) for having a complete understanding of this post.

Firstly, some precisions about the mobo (IC7-G) and the hardware :  From the 2003/05/29 to 2003/06/19 i have used the bios 1.3.  From 2003/06/19 to today i use the bios 1.4, the diffs between 1.3 and 1.4 are relatively minor according to
www.abit.com.tw/abitweb/webjsp/english/download_content.jsp? pTITLE=IC7-G&#Bios
From the 2003/05/29 to today, i use only standard DDR 3200 with SPD conf without overclocking.
There are two IDE disks, one is master at IDE0, the other is master at IDE1 where a dvdrom is slave. The mobo has a second SATAR0, a SiI3112 with two connectors, the first one use by an Onstream.

Secondly the main softs : 3.3-current, XF4 and KDE3.1 from the port.

Some definitions :
OK means "Work as expected (stability, perf)" KO ----- "Don't work at all with current at 2003/06/23"

And now we go :
ICH5:
IDE PATA : OK
IDE SATAR0 : KO, i hope grange work on it. USB : OK uniquely for recognition, but KO for configuration. i use the 0x24d2 for the test with one harddisk, there are few info about this disk at http://www.datastor.com.tw/best_buy/3500S.htm. It's not a cata i don't need it for the moment.
AC97 : OK for playing music, KO with KREC for recording but it's not a cata i don't need it for the moment.
Thanks to grange for his work with the ICH5 and nate for the USB.

em:
OK for the 82547EI on CSA bus, i use it since four days for surfing the web, just before i used a 3Com905 and i observe no drop in stability and perf. Unfortunaly, i have a LAN at 10Mb HD not 1Gb so i can i say nothing for 100Mb or 1Gb (so why i choose this one ? short answer : for the CSA principally). This LAN is behind a gateway who is behind the ISP with ADSL 512K/128K.
After <ifconfig em0 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0> the result of <ifconfig -a> for em0 is
<em0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

         address: 00:50:8d:fb:6d:34
         media: Ethernet autoselect (10baseT half-duplex)
         status: active
         inet 10.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 broadcast 255.0.0.0
         inet6 fe80::250:8dff:fefb:6d34%em0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1>
Thanks to henric for syncing the em driver from freebsd.

RNG:
From current i have add the case <case PCI_PRODUCT_INTEL_82875P_HB:> after the case <case PCI_PRODUCT_INTEL_82860_HB:> in pchb.c and at the boot the RNG is active according to the dmesg. Michael Shalayeff had a comment about this last point :
"rng is a false call".
Read the archive of this mailing-list (tech@openbsd.org) to know more and make your own opinion. And after ask him some precisions ! Thanks to Michael Shalayeff only for the indication allowing the RNG activation not for the rest.
Somebody can add the case or explain why it must not be add ? The last point : since i use the bios 1.4 the benchmark has changed, 370Kb/sec with 1.3, 375Kb/sec with 1.4, is this normal ? I think yes but it's not a certitude, perhaps something goes wrong. If nobody has the answer i will contact Abit.

The current dmesg :

Questions and constructive suggestions or comments are welcome.

Thanks to the others members of this mailing-list for their attention and thanks particularly to our dear Thugsnharmony36@aol.com with his question "i cant read this tell me how i can download a booter" (and why not later "i cant read this tell me how i can download finger" ? or other of the same sort). Without Thugsnharmony36@aol.com i would not been able to see the beautiful "char drawing" from Jolan Luff that give me the idea of a new sort of Eliza : Eliza using "char drawing", perhaps it exists already, i have not searched. Jolan Luff, have you other "char drawing" ? Do you publish them on the web ?

ELIZA:Sometimes, i am stupid, like the humans.
Somebody:You are not human !
ELIZA:Obviously, i am not a human, but a human is a sort of ELIZA ? No ?
Somebody:Turing
ELIZA:Who is "Turing" ? Please tell me now.
Somebody:Read the fucking web !
ELIZA:Thanks, i love learning.
Somebody:Who is Turing ?
