Is there a problem you are trying to solve?

If sendmail is used as a remote MTA on the Internet, you should probably configure sendmail.

If you have local users on your machine that's in touch with the Internet, you should probably configure sendmail.

EXPN and VRFY are useless on a gateway machine (you get a yes answer to everything).

We disable SMTP to the machine from the network by default. We <nigel>
"go to 11 - see some OS's they just go to 10 and then they can't  go anymore. We turn off SMTP and put it at 11. We have 1 more."
