If you REALLY want to make FFS on USB-flash (so flash will not be read by other OSes) you should do this:

  fdisk -e sd0
(edit partition table)

     and then
  disklabel -E sd0
(edit disklabel)
  

NB: "sd0" not "sd0a" !

Another hand, if you want to use flash with another OS, you should not reformat it - USB-flash, usually, already contain partition (FAT-partition).
  You can mount(8) this partition, like that:     mount -t msdos /dev/sd0i /mnt
