unionfs diagnostics question

I'm working on a live CD OpenBSD project, and am thus having to screw around with mfs and unionfs to get rw on various directories (especially /etc and /var ). I notice that when I union mount /usr , the system tends to panic with "union: locking against myself" when I run a binary from /usr (for example, less or which).

I can of course fix it for now by not union mounting /usr, but I wondered if anyone could give an explanation of what the panic means from a technical standpoint. I've taken a look at union_vnops.c, however the panic is not explained in any more detail in the comments.

I'm happy to look at the problem myself, however if anyone else is working on debugging unionfs and would like me to run tests or send output, I can do so as well.

thanks,
